I was a rebel for many years of my life I refused to hear the call of nature, the call to be a nurse. Originally I was born in Colombia, I am the oldest of four, and my mother worked as Microbiologist at the local children’s hospital. As a teenager I volunteered to care and entertain the little children in the Cancer unit, and I was told by my mother and nurses in that unit that I was called to be a nurse and that was my true call; gently I responded with a smile while thinking in my mind they were crazy. When it was time to start college I decided to go for Geology because it was fun, but, I didn’t graduate because I moved to the United States while I was doing my graduation project. From there, I went on to study Chemical Technology and finally I realized it was always meant for me to be a Nurse when I had to care for my second child when she got ill as a baby. In my current role as an Emergency Room nurse the main focus is to prioritize, rapidly assess, and treat patients of all ages that arrived to the Emergency Room with a variety of conditions from a simple rash to heart ...
In nursing, the patient is often viewed as the main priority of the nursing staff. The nurse works to provide care for the patient based on the patient 's admitting diagnosis. However, the patient must be looked at as a part of the greater system they exist in such as their family or home environment. While the patient may be ill due to a bacterial infection or virus, their family environment also plays a role in their overall health and wellness.
Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.
After graduating from nursing school with my associate degree, I began working as an emergency room nurse in a level one trauma center in East Texas. It has been 19 years now and I continue to work in emergency care. I now work in a smaller, yet still very busy emergency room. In the past, I have worked in many capacities, and now I am a staff nurse and work a peak hours shift, therefore I am busy the entire 12 hour shift, which I thoroughly enjoy. I precept new employees and students, and I am an instructor for TNCC. I care for patients that are critically ill or injured and also for those who only have minor complaints, and everything in between. I find satisfaction in caring for all levels of patients. Each patient no matter if their complaint is minor or life threatening they have come to me for help and I try and deliver the care they need. Emergency nursing is challenging in that there is always something new to learn and when you think you have seen it all, you will see something new. My relationships with my patients are brief, but I try and deliver the care that the patient needs as efficiently as possible. I feel it is important to interact with them, identify goals and react with care that will help them work towards the goals. If the patient is unable to identify their health goals due to illness then it is up to me to work with family and the physician to determine their goals.
When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
Ever since I was in middle school I dreamed of working in the medical field. I realized nursing was the profession for me when my grandfather became terribly sick with lung cancer during my freshman year of high school. It puzzled me that one of the healthiest and most physically active people I knew could be afflicted by such a damaging disease. After watching my grandfather’s suffering and the pain my entire family felt from his death, I knew I wanted to go into a field to help others that are facing the same challenges. This is when I discovered all of the opportunities that a career in nursing could offer me.
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. In high school, I was among those students who always indicated that I will be going college. However, unlike most people I seem to meet these days I did not know that I wanted to be a doctor. When it was time to head off to college, I was still unsure of what I wanted to pursue. As most college freshmen, I did not know what major best suits my personality. I desired a career that would define who I am and a career that is self-gratifying. However, the path that I should follow was unclear to me. Because of my uncertainty I failed to see that my parents dream became my reality. As I began my college experience as a nursing student, I felt somewhat out of place. I realized that my reason for majoring in nursing was my parents' influence on me. They wanted me to believe that nursing is right for me. I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field, but I felt that I needed to know how to choose a medical specialty that I feel is right for me. My first step was to change my major. I chose to change my major to biology. My love for science led me to this decision. I began to explore the opportunities open to biology students.
It’s been my desire, longing for a nursing career since I was in my primary and secondary school. At the age of 12, I began to look after children and baby-sitting then, from there, I gained the understanding of how to deal with children. Nursing is one of the highly demanding careers that bring new challenges every day and it comes with various rewards and a real sense of job satisfaction. I chose nursing because it is a profession where you never really finish learning. It has been my dream job since my tender age. Seeing nurses visiting my school treating students, immunisation, teaching us about health and sexual health issues, this encouraged me. For my clinical observation experience I went to the Emergency Department at JFK Medical Center. The first emergency nurse I was assigned to was responsible for six beds. When I first arrived the nurse explained to me that she prioritizes her care based on urgency and airway problem. Since the rest of her patients were stable, she went to perform a focused assessment on a new patient assigned to one of her beds. This patient came in because he had fallen in the bathroom. Nurses are an equally important part of each client’s life. Nurses provide stable care to each client, answer their questions, give medications and treatments, and assist with medical procedures. They also have the responsibility to explain to clients and family members what they should and should not do as they go through treatment and recovery. Nurses must quickly respond to patients needs. Every individual nurse has his or her own unique way of caring.
I was never one of those who as a young girl wanted to become a nurse, I knew I always wanted to work in health care administration. I will say my journey to become a nurse started after facing some challenging health and personal experience. I lost my father suddenly to heart disease at age 15. My father was my bedrock who at that time always wanted me to become a nurse, but as a teenager I wanted to do my own thing. Not until I experienced a series of hospitalization. One that stood out for me was when I was in the hospital for two weeks getting exchange transfusions, and I almost died. The nurses were incredible. They were angels at my bedside. They encouraged me, worked me through my treatment plan, and explained every detail to me. The nurses were the parents I did not have at my bedside for 24 hours. After discharge, I started to think about a career in nursing. Not too long after this occurrence, I started taking my prerequisites while I volunteered at Bellevue Hospital. After a long journey, I finally became a registered nurse.
Working in the emergency department can be easily described as fast placed and at times hectic. Being aware of resource management and learning to prioritize patients are skills that are required to be learned quickly. Once a basic understanding and knowledge of these skills are acquired, nurses are able to build off of them and adapt them however they see fit.
My career of nursing is like the cyclical pattern of life, as time passes and situations are experienced, one is shaped into a certain individual/professional, ending up in places that never seemed to be part of life’s plan. Personally, the challenges and triumphs of providing patient centered care to help others live a healthier life, and aiming to prevent illness, is rewarding and quite humbling. As I continue to learn about opportunities to provide individualized care to patients and their families, I further understand the imperativeness of the “whole person,” which is a critical skill of a nurse practitioner. As a skilled clinician, progressing in my career as an aspiring family nurse practitioner in the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, I will impact my patients by providing them comprehensive care that will result in improved quality of life.

Nurses are always in high demand, someone will always need your help, so you will always be able to make a difference in someone’s life. You are able to go to any hospital, they are always in need of a nurse for so many different positions. It 's a very productive field to apply yourself in. I love the challenge of nursing. I enjoy the fulfillment of conquering goals that our sat out for me to achieve, and I know choosing nursing as my major is putting myself on a very successful and joyous track.l
