My Abduction and the War in Sierra Leone

This personal essay outlines some of Sierra Leone’s history about the civil war that started in the 1990’s and some of the atrocities that took place during this sad moment of time in the country history. Some of the incidents that took place are the acts of mutilating civilians by removing their limbs, burning down houses with civilian inside and the issue of child abduction (GlobalSecurity.org) . This essay will however only focus on the explanation of the Revolutionary United Front group, their intentions and how this leads to child abduction during the war. I decided to talk about this topic because I spent significant part of my life in Sierra Leone and was also a victim of child abduction. Discussing this issue brings back the memories of trauma and heartache that people witnessed due to the selfishness of another human being. However I chose this topic because I would like to reflect on the past while at the same time discuss some of the improvements made so far to heal the wounds that was caused by the war.

The civil war in Sierra Leone started when I was only four years old. The group that was formed was the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) under the direction of Foday Sankoh. The RUF group was formed as a result of anger towards the political party during the periods of 1968-1985. The group originated from students that were “thrown out of university” as a result of them protesting against the political government which was very treacherous to the people of Sierra Leone (Pratt, 1999 in GlobalSecurity.org). With the help from other military sources this group was trained to destroy the lives of innocent civilian as a way of making a statement (GlobalSecurity.org).
