Music has been a large part of the Shoals communities for many years. W.C. Handy, a Florence native and trumpeter, was one of the first people to write down the blues, establishing it as a written form. Florence also hosts the Shoals Symphony, one of the very few orchestras in the state, so the arts are fairly healthy here. Muscle Shoals has historically celebrated recording studios like the the Fame recording studio and Muscle Shoals Sound recording studio. An incredible amount of very famous popular music has been recorded in those studios with names from Aretha Franklin to the Rolling Stones recording in the city. Florence and Muscle Shoals are relatively small towns, so what about this area caused is to be conducive to the production music in the way it has? Geography obviously had a roll, but what about the people that made it this way? What were they like, and what were their backgrounds? Who were they? What was special about them that created the music of the Shoals? There have been amazing musicians who singularly impacted the music of this area, but community music has done so as well, and the community is what fosters art. So the question moves forward, what made and still makes people is Shoals want pursue music?
First, what about the Shoals allowed it to be a successful area for the evolution of music? Geography was a huge factor. The quad-cities of the Shoals; Florence, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals sit the banks of the Tennessee River, and these waters connect to the Mississippi River which flows all the way south to New Orleans. New Orleans, of course, is quite poetically known as the birthplace of jazz, and, yes, there was jazz in New Orleans before there was jazz in New York, but the cau...

...or the most part is very separated church and shows diversity in the ideals of and beliefs that was much less diverse in prior years. However, this shows more opportunity for the musical culture of North Alabama to evolve further. The Shoals has had a large volume of music for a long time and people subconsciously feel the need to perpetuate that legacy here. The music scene is intensifying again with local groups receiving Grammies. Growing up here in Shoals mean that people will talk about who recorded and Muscle Shoals and what artists are from the area. Florence has the University of North Alabama and has the W.C. Handy festival that supports his legacy, and fosters and interest in Jazz which is one of the few American art forms. The Shoals is a great place Music of almost any popular genre can be found each year and it appear that the interest is only growing.
