Music plays a major role in life for most people. It can soothe and excite, encourage sleep and encourage dancing, we can sing to it and ponder it. There are so many different uses of music and so many mediums through which to play it such as Pandora, Spotify, YouTube, etc. Beyond that, more songs every day there are new songs being written. Statistics show that ninety-five percent of all Americans think that music is a core part of a balanced and well-rounded education. The same study showed that ninety-three percent of Americans thought music belonged in the public schooling system, and seventy-nine percent even suggested that music education should be mandatory for all students. Most universities require four English credits, at least three math credits, at least two foreign language credits, at least two social studies credits, and at least two laboratory science credits to accept students into the school. However, these schools do look at test scores and students with a musical background do tend to have higher test scores. Additionally, if there is a question between two possible applicants, colleges will look at extracurricular activities. Whichever student has the most impressive list of extracurricular activities is more likely to get accepted than the other. With one of the largest problems facing the music education system being financing, a possible solution could be instituting a system like the pay-to-play system for sports programs. Pay-to-play systems require that all athletes who take part in the season pay a fee to help cover transportation and equipment. During the season, there are usually a few fundraisers as well. Music programs could adapt these ideas to suit each individual school
