The muscular system makes up about 44% of the body weight. There are 700 skeletal muscles in the human body. They consist of; axial muscle which supports and positions axial skeleton, and appendicular muscle which support, move and brace limbs. The functions of the muscular system includes: movement, maintaining body position, support of tissue, regulating entrances and exits, and maintaining body temperature. The muscle cell had many nuclei. This helps to produce adequate protein. These protein aids during contraction. The skeletal structure consist of many layers of the muscle fiber tightly wound together to form a skeletal muscle. Microfilaments are the smallest strand bundled together to form …show more content…

Hernia is the condition where an abdominal organ protrudes from the abdominal cavity. This is caused there is a weak spot where there has been a weakening of the muscle. Thus, when we cough or sneeze, an intra-abdominal contraction occurs. This forces an abdominal organ to bulge out of the weak spot. An example is an incisional hernia. This happens after an abdominal surgery. Here, the muscle didn’t heal properly thereby weakening the muscle. This is usually treated through open hernia repair. Herniorrhaphy involves the opening of the weak spot and stitching the stronger muscles over the weaker muscle. This is usually very painful. A less painful treatment is hernioplasty. Hernioplasty is also an open hernia repair but here, a mesh made from polypropylene mesh device is used to reinforce the muscle. Laparoscopy treatment, another option for hernia repair is a less invasive …show more content…

The ice should be off after the second day, to allow for heat which encourages blood flow to begin the healing of the torn or strained tissue. Exercise helps the muscle heal and staying in shape helps keep the muscle healthy and strong.
Hopson, Donatelle and Littrel writes in Get Fit, Stay Well! about various ways prevent muscle strain and also keep the muscle healthy and strong:
• Good posture should be maintained.
• Movement of the body should be warmed into by changing positions and moving objects carefully.
• Before an active physical activity, a proper warm up should be done to increase blood flow. This can be done by walking, jogging and mimicking the range of motion.
• For resistance trainers, basic training guidelines should be adhered to.
• After a physical activity, a proper cool down and stretching should be done.
• Limit the exercise frequency, time and intensity to “10% limit” (Hopson et al) a week
• Get advice from a qualified exercise professional.
Muscle strain can occur from a strenuous physical activity, weak muscles and during our everyday movement. We need to listen to our body to detect when our muscle is strained. Then slow down, until we recover from the strain to avoid overstretching the muscle. Good posture and exercise will keep our muscle strong and healthy of function
