The issue of whether or not it is morally correct to aide someone in dying has been an issue since before the birth of Christ. The Hippocratic Oath, written in 4th century B.C., which most modern doctors do not take, includes the following statement “I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan.” (Pickert par 1) In 1997 the Supreme Court ruled that Americans do not have a constitutional right to doctor-assisted suicide, then in 2006 they decided that it should be up to the states to decide if it is legal or not. Currently in the United State it is legal in Montana, Oregon, Washington, Vermont and New Mexico. In Oregon the Death with Dignity Act was passed in 1997 that allows terminally ill patients the choice to end their life. The patient must meet certain requirements to proceed such as; less than six months left to live deemed by their attending physician, two oral requests, a written request, a medical consultation and a psychiatric evaluation referral to ensure that they are fully aware and competent of the choice they are making.
