“He floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.” Muhammad Ali is famous mostly because he is a very talented boxer, and in the eyes of some he is considered to be the best boxer ever. He is considered the best because of his amazing footwork, powerful jab and his fast flurries of punches. He is inspiring because of the way he fought through racism at a time when blacks and “coloured skins” had separate washrooms and drinking fountains than whites. Not only that, but he was the world heavyweight champion, and won a gold medal in those tough times. Over the years Muhammad Ali has shown the character traits of courage because he stood up to the world by not fighting in the war, and confidence because no matter how good his opponent was he would always guarantee the exact way he would beat his opponent.
Muhammad Ali was born on January 17, 1942. His birth name is Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. His mother Odessa Grady Clay and his father Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr. Cassius found out he could box in a very unusual turn of events. Cassius had gotten a red bike on his twelfth birthday, but soon after it was stolen. He reported this to a police officer named Joe Martin. He informed him that when he found the thief he would beat him up, Joe told him he had to learn how to fight first, lucky for Cassius Joe was also a trainer. That was when he knew that he could box. To train he would run seven miles before school every day. In 1960 Cassius made the US men’s Olympic team. After four bouts he won the gold medal and afterwards he had a little poem which went “To make America the greatest is my goal, So I beat the Russian and I beat the Pole, And for the U.S.A. won the Medal of Gold.”
When Cassius came back from the Olympics he went to a restaurant which had a white owner. The waitress took his order but when she came back she told Cassius that the owner did not want a black served even though he was an Olympic gold medalist. The day after Cassius won the heavyweight title he converted his religion from Christian to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali.
