Video Interview and Reflection Paper This paper will cover the reflection on a class interview for a senior social worker intern. The teacher gave every student ten minutes to complete the interview. The social worker intern was prepared for the interview. She found out her scenario just minutes before the interview. This paper will focus on the limits of confidentiality for the client, potential assessment for the client, engagement with the client, and evaluation of the social worker. Scenario The story was about a social worker intern who was placed in the hospital emergency room. The social worker had to do an intervention to one of her classmates who is in the same social work program, Ralph. Ralph arrives in need of facial sutures after Every client in a hospital has the right to keep their information confidential, unless required by law which can include: notification of infectious diseases, notification of suspected child abuse, legal process, necessary for the public interest, and serious criminal activity (Wilson,1997). In Ralph case, the social worker can suspect of child abuse since he came in with a 14-year-old girl. The social worker intern is a mandated reporter which it requires her to do a report to child protection services. The agency will decide if there is a child abuse in Ralph The social worker should have asked more open-ended questions, by asking more questions she could be able to get more information about the client’s feelings. By Seeking concreteness would be more helpful for the social worker to be able to get more clear thoughts on how to help Ralph (Hepworth et al, 2013, p.144). Seeking concreteness, the social worker would be able to get Ralph’s message and she will be able to better assist him with his needs. Another way to help Ralph would be for the social worker to paraphrase everything he says, to make it clear to him that the social worker understands what he is saying (Hepworth et al, 2013, p.173). The social worker did demonstrated empathy to the client. According to the book, Direct Social Worker Practice: Theory and Skills, the social worker would be in the level 3 on showing empathy. Level 3 demonstrates apparent emotions in the client’s message, but the deeper feeling of the client is not taken into consideration (Hepworth et al, 2013, p.103). Since the social worker is an intern she still needs to learn how to connect with the deeper feelings of every client she will have in the future. Through self-reflection of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, I will delve into why I chose social work as a career, the type of social worker I want to become, and ponder what challenges and obstacles may impede my chosen path.
Confidentiality and trust between the client and social worker is an important part of the therapeutic process. Confidentiality is discussed frequently with the client, in trainings, and in supervisions. When a client first begins services there are multiple forms to fill out, many of which explain the agency’s confidentiality policies and provide client’s the opportunity to agree to share information with certain parties (i.e. their PCP, psychiatrist, specialty providers) or not share any information at all. Despite this focus on confidentiality there are some areas where “the rights of others take precedence over a client’s right to confidentiality” (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, & Gottfried, 2017, p. 76). As a student new to social work, The Code of Ethics written by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is in the forefront of my mind whenever practicing my freshly learned skills. According to the Code, these rules were written as the “values, principles, and standards to guide social workers’ conduct” (Code of Ethics - NASW, n.d.). Within my most-recent session, certain aspects of this code were relevant, including informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, a commitment to the client, the dignity and worth of a person, the importance of human relationships, integrity and competency of the worker, and social diversity.
Disclosing confidential patient information without patient consent can happen in the health care field quite often and is the basis for many cases brought against health care facilities. Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
During the interviewing process it is important that social workers have structure (cite). When doing the social workers needs to make sure that the client is comfortable communicating their needs (cite). This can take some time. Today’s skills session on social work interviewing skills covered the uniqueness of social work interviewing in comparison to interviews conducted in professions such as the police, doctors, employers, etc. It covered also different types of questioning and how to paraphrase. Another area covered was, what to avoid when interviewing a service user and the use of silence. I leant that interview skills are fundamental in social work and social work interviewing is unique. Social workers empathize with clients because of their knowledge of the client group and the need of help to alleviate their problems. Empathy however does not equate accepting that the client is right in what they have done or that the social worker is condoning their actions. Empathy relates to the issue of ‘trusting’ and ‘believing’ the client. In as much as a social worker should seek to establish trust in the relationship, this does not necessarily mean they should believe
Interviewing and research skills are needed within the social work profession. Effective communication skills are one of the most crucial components of a social worker’s job. Every day, social workers must communicate with clients to gain information, convey critical information and make important decisions (Zeiger, 2017). This interview experience was an opportunity to explore the daily challenges and rewards of a licensed social worker. I was excited for the opportunity to interview a social worker in the gerontology sector as this is a specialty I am considering. This meeting allowed me to explore the educational steps of being a social worker, practices of the agency, the clients who are served, and the challenges the agency has.
Ms. Phillips provided a great deal of insight into child welfare practices of Pitt County (W. Phillips, personal communication, October 4th, 2013). I believed the interview was highly beneficial to Heather and I as prospective social workers. Understanding the amount of work that goes into positions such as Ms. Phillips’ will help us prepare for our future roles in the field. Ms. Phillips illustrated that though the helping field may require a great deal from the individual, the practice can be extremely rewarding.
Captain Rob Geis agreed to be interviewed and share his experiences with the next generation of Social Workers. Native to Ohio, he graduated High School in 1979, he continued his education at Ohio State University from 1982-1986, completing his Masters in Social Work. For the past 24 years, he has served as a Social Worker in the United States Army. In his current position he is responsible for the Department of Social Work Services. Previous positions have included: two assignments as a Division Social Worker, Medical Inpatient Social Worker, Chief of Social Work, Division Chief of Mental Health, Clinical Director of Army Substance Abuse Program, Combat Operation Stress Control Commander, and General Staff Officer (Geis, 2012). Academic positions have included both, the Army Long Term Health Education and Training (LTHET) as well as the Command and General Staff College.

I used rephrasing as a part of understanding the reason for the client’s visit and repeated the information in a way that we both could understand. The client was able to respond through the questions that I asked her in regards to her situation. I want to get a clear understanding without leaving out valuable information. In the three sessions my intentions were to make sure that what she gave me over the phone matches what she says in the interview. I made sure that when my client was speaking, I took notes on the new information or the information that was not covered in any of the previous sessions. Each session was based upon reflection because I had to make sure progress was being made or not. When my client began to discuss things in a way in which I could not understand, I was able to interpret the information in a way that she and I both understood and agreed upon. The social worker sets to the side the form of oppression, so it focuses on the need of social advocacy and social action. Also, coming from a low-income family I had suffer first hand hunger. My parent were poor that there were times we would eat a piece of bread and water. This event motivate me to help other people in need to provide resources that they need to better their well-being.
