MP3 PIRACY

The trading of MP3's or digital music over the Internet is all ways going to be prevalent part of the music industry, and is an unrealistic goal to try to control. The cost of controlling the piracy issues over the Internet would cost record companies more money than what they are losing due to MP3 trading. The record industry is trying to fight the major sites and companies in court with copyright suits. Quinlan states “ Although downloading music over the Internet and playing it back on computer or portable digital music players has become increasingly popular, major record labels have been slow to embrace distribution over the Web because of the difficultly in preventing unauthorized – and unpaid – copying of songs.”
THE MP3 FORMAT:
MP3 is a file format which compresses audio files to efficiently store the audio data in files that can be easily downloaded on the Internet. MP3 files are identified by the file extension
MP3 and require specialized players which decompress the files and then play the audio files like a regular CD. For all practical purposes, mp3 files can be exact, near-perfect digital copies of the original recorded material. In other words, an mp3 file is a near-perfect copy of a cd and can be stored on a computer or other data storage media.MP3 shrinks audio files in such a way that sound quality is preserved, but the file size is significantly smaller than it would be as a regular CD song file. This means you are able, to download an entire song in only a few minutes. After that, you can play the song instantly–as many times as you want--regardless of your modem speed!
Kimmel (1997) states “ Quite simply, the technology behind the MP3 audio format allows for high compression ratio and CD- quality sound. An Mp3 file compresses a sound file to one-twelfth its original size.”

Motown’s first #1 hit was “Please Mr. Postman” by the Marvelettes in 1961. The song stayed on the Top Ten charts for 1 week, which was typical for this time period. Gordy, then signed Mary Wells to his flourishing music label. Mary Wells has a string of pop songs that reached on the Top Ten charts. The Distants were signed to his label in 1961 but you might recognize them as The Temptations. Also in 1961, Gordy signed Marvin Gaye, whose most famous song was Let’s Get It On. Gordy signed many artists like The Supremes, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy and David Ruffin, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Commodores and The Jackson 5.
Loud noises a common cause of hearing. Constant exposure to loud noises such as noises made by drilling equipments and very loud music, causes the gradual damage of the hair cells in cochlea. Exposure to thunderous noise of explosions can cause sudden hearing loss.
After a few top hits, Gordy established a formula for Motown music: an easy-to-remember melody, lyrics written in the present tense and lead singers working against background singers rather than as an ensemble (Posner 52). Motown artists embraced and enhanced a distinctive music style -- upbeat, positive music combining pop, soul, blues and gospel with catchy lyrics to create a new sophisticated dimension and intensity for pop music. Phil Spector, a Motown music producer, is credited with using reverb and instrument overdubbing to create Motown's distinctive "wall of sound" (Quizlet).
Amidst the continually increasing levels of commercially distributed music, there is widespread concern that the sonic quality of today’s popular music is deteriorating. More than ever before, dynamic compression is utilized in mixing and mastering to make a song as loud as possible. The belief that “louder is better” has lead to these mixing and mastering practices that have since been coined as “The Loudness Wars”. The great irony in this matter is that in an age where technology thrives and our advancements in applied sciences have come so far, one should expect the quality of recorded music to be outstanding. However, as the trend of hyper-compression progresses, there is an undeniable regress in the sonic quality of commercial music. The motive behind all of this was simple: louder music, if perceived as better, will result in higher sales figures. However, there are many fatal flaws to this theory. This essay will examine the origins of the loudness wars, as well as short and long-term consequences that may arise as a result of hyper-compression and limiting.

MP3 stands for MPEG 1 Layer 3 Audio, which is a digital audio compression format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. It takes a CD audio file and gets rid of all the frequencies on the song that can’t be heard by the human ear, thus ridding the data file of much wasted space. With compression, the files turn out to be around four times smaller than the original with the same, near CD quality audio. While “MP3“ may technically be the name of the compression format, it has become synonymous with the music files themselves.
Hearing loss is a major global public health issue. Hearnet (2017) defines hearing loss as “a disability that occurs when one or more parts of the ear and/or the parts of the brain that make up the hearing pathway do not function normally” (para. 1). Hearing loss is also known as hearing impairment. Hearing loss happens when something in your ear or ears is damaged. People who have hearing loss, sometimes can hear a little, but it is muffled and others can not hear at all. Hearing impairments happen from noise, aging, disease, and heredity. Men are more likely to have hearing loss than women. Hearing loss has negative effects on people, and sometimes can lead to other problems. Perhaps one of the greatest advancements in music that we use on a daily basis, the MP3 file, could also be one of our worst findings! The main idea of the documentary, The Distortion Of Sound, is that artists music is being distorted through modern technology; therefore sucking the originality and feeling out of their music when they put everything they have into their music.
Experts about false memory have explained that the Mandela Effect as confabulation where different memories get mixed together to create something worth believing. The formal definition of The Mandela Effect is a collective misremembering of a fact or event. In simpler terms, the Mandela Effect is when a large group of people have a memory of a fact or event, but when you look back it never actually happened or what you knew to be true is somewhat altered. The Effect is somewhat different from a false memory as it affects large groups of people, seemingly without many connections and without the same emotional factors present. Although you may not know it now, almost everyone can find evidence of the Mandela Effect that specifically relates to them. Now you may be wondering, why is it called the Mandela Effect? The Mandela Effect was first mentioned in 2010 by a woman named Fiona Broome.

All the big phone companies at the time were premiering phones with more mp3 storage than mp3 player, essentially foreshadowing the future.
