The movie Rain Man is an American drama that depicts the story of a self-centered young man named Charlie Babbitt, as played by Tom Cruise, who finds out that his father has died. Upon his father’s passing Charlie, as stated in the Will, is only left his father’s car and his collection of rose bushes. Considering his father was a multimillionaire, this is a quite a surprise to Charlie. After finding out that his father has left millions for another trustee, Charlie manipulates individuals with information on the whereabouts of the money. He learns through his manipulations that the three million dollars his father has left have been transferred to a mental institution. When he goes to the mental institution he discovers that his father has left all of the estate, valued at 3 million dollars, to his other son Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman. Charlie doesn’t know of Raymond 's existence and so he is surprised to discover his brother is an autistic savant.
Charlie is a considerable amount of debt. He is desperate to gain access to the estate. In his attempt to gain access to the cash Charlie takes Raymond out of the mental institution and brings him to a hotel. He asks the doctor for half the 3 million dollars in exchange for Raymond 's return. However, his plan fails when the doctor refuses to give him the money. At this time, Charlie decides that the best way to gain access to the estate is by gaining full custody of Raymond. In order to gain full custody of Raymond they have to go to Los Angeles and since flying is a real fear of Raymond they have to travel across the country to go to L.A. They families have to handle the financial burden, the emotional stress, and the guilt of not being able to make the ASD person `better`. That said, the prognosis for individuals with ASD is much better now than it was 30 years ago. With proper behavioural and medical treatment, tailored to their condition, they can care for themselves and live a productive life. Moreover, the portrayal of ASD in the media is somewhat accurate in terms of showing the general signs and symptoms of the disorder. However, the media fails to depict the spectrum nature of the disorder. There is no unique set of symptoms, no one treatment, not one prognosis that can sum up all the different kinds of autism disorders that exist on the spectrum.
