The movie Crash examines the interpersonal communications that exists between different groups’ of people. In this film, characters are highlighted by the contact that occurs when disparate people are thrown together in large urban settings. Crash displays extreme instances of racism and shows how the thought, feeling, and behavior of individuals are influenced by actual, imagined, or implied presence of other human beings. My analysis will focus on Social Cognition and how people process, and apply information about other people and social situations. Crash focuses on acts of judgements that people make about others, which can lead to Stereotyping. Officer Ryan is a white bigoted police officer who has a clear hatred of African Americans. The scene depicts Office Ryan pulling over a vehicle, because it looks like one that was reported stolen. However, after running the plates, he knows the vehicle is not stolen, but using his Legitimate Power, he pulls the vehicle over anyway. Like most power, legitimate power is based upon perception and reality, and the ability to influence others based on their status, and the right to comply. However, once the stop is initiated, he then engages in Coercive Power, and sexually assaults the female passenger, Christine Thayer, as her husband, Cameron Thayer, watches helplessly. Ryan hatred of blacks is so intense that he does even care that he has just committed a crime in front of his partner, a partner who knows that he has just crossed the line. Officer Ryan has no respect for blacks, and used racial profiling as a means of pulling over and harassing the couple. When a person with authority uses their position to force someone to comply with what they want, by using acts of threats and intimation is coercive power. In the film Crash, Writer and Director Paul Haggis intentionally portrays his characters as the typical ethnic stereotypes that are prevalent today: an upper-class white woman who is uneasy by the sight of two young Black kids, a Latino with a shaved head, tattoos who steals, a Persian man who could not speak much English, and Asian men/women who do not know how to drive or speak proper English. It also focuses on how we should not stereotype people based on their color because one may come out wrong in the end. Tension between the African Americans and Caucasians have been present in America since slavery. In the movie Crash (2004), race and culture are major themes that can be seen in the lives of the characters in the film. One character in particular, Cameron, a prestigious color vision director, displays the friction between two cultures. He belongs to the educated, upper class of the Los Angeles area. He is also an African American, yet he seems to have no ties with that class. He has a light-skinned wife, attends award shows, and it appears that his acquaintances are predominately white. When he and his wife, Christine, get pulled over by a racist cop, he experiences emotions of powerlessness and helplessness that he never knew he would experience due to his upbringing and place in society. Cameron goes through a radical transformation where he comes to grips with his background and how he fits into these two clashing cultures.

Gender stereotypes play a noticeable role in the film due to the fact that they are not mentioned or resolved as the racial matters are. Movie’s ending part holds hope for a world which accepts all forms of race, but the plot does not talks about gender, it does not bring hope for a gender which is accepted by world. Several stories take place in the movie crash during the period in Los Angeles. The women in this film share similar characteristics with each other although they are of different class and race. Most of the men also have similar characteristics, but in a masculine and controlling way compared to the women. All the characters in the movie are very narrow-minded and self-justifying. The difference in the movie is that men are macho and self-justifying of their masculine power while the women are self-justifying of their possessions and loved ones.

The Change-Up is a comedy that came out in 2011 starring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds. In the movie, Jason Bateman’s character (Dave) is an overworked lawyer, husband and father of three. His best friend, Mitch (played by Ryan Reynolds), is a quasi-employed, single man who lacks any sense of responsibility. One evening, the two men go out for a night at the bar and while urinating in a nearby fountain, say that they wish they had each other’s lives. Suddenly, the next morning, they wake up and realize that they have switched lives. The remainder of the movie follows the two men as they live each other’s lives and realize what they truly want in their own life.
Interpersonal Conflict in Film The interpersonal conflict in this film is the same as in most of our daily lifestyles as humans. There are many times in life when things that people say are taken out of context and or control and you wish that you could play it off as if it was never even said. There were so many instances of conflict in this film that I couldn’t choose just one. After watching this great and funny film, I learned that I need to be careful of what is said.
