Movie Analysis: The Mummy Can Be Compared to Odysseus

What makes a person a hero? Is it strength and humility or is it simply the courage? In the movie The Mummy, Rick O’Connell can be compared to Odysseus in the movie The Odyssey. Rick and Odysseus have to face many challenges in order to survive. Rick and Odysseus face challenges in many different ways while being tested or simply fighting to the end. They do whatever they can so that they are able to survive. Rick and Odysseus have to sacrifice things like their family and money if they want to survive. Both of these heroes have significant qualities such as strength, courage, and the ability to conquer challenges. Although, they both have positive qualities about them, they have negative ones also. Both of them struggle from selfishness. Rick only thinks about himself when he wants the treasure. Odysseus shows selfishness when he does not fight for his men only for himself. While both of these characters show only true remorse for themselves they also can be caring and courageous for others. Rick is the true hero over Odysseus because he shows more hero figure qualities on his hero’s journey.

Rick goes through harder tasks than Odysseus. Odysseus has to go fight in the Trojan War and he has to be gone for twenty years. Odysseus has to fight for his life and he needs to sacrifice many things like his wife and not being able to see her. Odysseus is put through many tests to see if he can survive them. For example when Odysseus was in the ocean, with only with a piece of wood to keep him from going under, Poseidon was creating waves that were unbelievably big so Odysseus was having to fight for his life. When Odysseus was climbing this mountain it was only him he was fighting for himself Rick was fighting for more than himself he was fighting for the people that he cared most about. Therefore that makes Rick the better hero.

Ricks courage, strength and, loving and caring personally for people makes the greater hero. The hero figure of him is outstanding. He will do whatever he can to save somebody life. Rick is always thinking how they can survive and what the next plan is going to be and what is the next step that they are going to take. Rick is always showing that he is a very strong person and he fights all the way to the end he does not give up. Therefore this shows that Ricks is a greater hero than Odysseus
