Crash: Analyzing Interconnectedness and Racial Stereotypes

When walking in public and crossing paths with different people, have you ever thought about if you’re ever going to see that person again. But in actuality, that person can be your future boss or even coworker, or the murderer of a loved family member. The movie Crash shows that every person on this earth is somehow connected to each other; it doesn’t matter if you are black, white, or Hispanic. It is a very intriguing movie it is about racial stereotypes that people believe in, and how they let them influence the way they see people. These stereotypes lead to many of the characters in the movie to have prejudices about certain people in the movie. The theme of multiculturalism has also made its influence on the major characters of the movie: a white American district attorney and his wife who is constantly scared of "the other"; two African American thieves who steal their car, a racist police officer who offends an African American TV producer and harasses his wife, a non-racist police officer, a Latino lock maker, a Persian family and another African American detective in the search of his brother. The plot of the movie intersects all characters ' lives and their attitudes towards each other after 9/11, while making the audience question the validity of prejudices and racial stereotypes. This movie brings much needed attention on the fact that race is the big issue in this film; it’s what causes the problems that these people run into. A rich white lady not wanting a “gangbanger” Hispanic guy changing her locks for fear that he might sell the keys to his “homies”, a pair of black men robbing that same white women and husband just because they knew that she feared them. Furthermore, I think Crash is an amazing movie; it has a spectacular cast of actors portraying these deep characters. Any person, who likes a different kind of American drama about social and racial tensions in a Los Angeles setting, should totally check out this film. Moreover, the Crash is what I would call a in your face movie a glimpse of reality, but it is also a movie which emphasizes the significance of the recognition of the human being, instead of the recognition of the other. The movie Crash shows that every person on this earth is somehow connected to each other; it doesn’t matter if you are black, white, or Hispanic. Its racial stereotypes display throughout the movie shows the structural violence that we face every day in America which often invisible, it’s often has no one specific person who can be held responsible for what take place in society.
