Brokeback Mountain and The Love of Siam are two movies, which two main characters from each film, namely Ennis and Jack from Brokeback Mountain and Mew and Tong from The Love of Siam, all four of them have a connection that goes from friendship to a homosexual relationship, respectively. What was the narrative of the show, who were the characters, and director? Love Jones the Musical is a makeover of the movie Love Jones directed and written by Theodore Witcher. The film starred Larenz Tate - as Darius Lovehall, and Nia Long - as Nina Mosley. The musical produced by Melvin Childs is touring around the country. I was able to catch an evening show of the shows only two nights held at the Kings Theater in Brooklyn. The stars of the musical are Tony Grant - as Darius Lovehall, and Chrisette Michelle - as Nina Mosley. Singers Musiq Soulchild, MC Lyte, Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem Devaughn, and Dave Hollister played themselves. The musical like the movie takes place in Chicago. The plot was also similar to that of 1997 movie in which Darius a poet and Nina a photographer gets together and fall in love. Trials and tribulations test their relationship, but the couple proved that black love is strong by overcoming their obstacles in the end.
Steel Magnolias is a movie about the lives of six southern women and the drama that unfolds during a difficult period in their lives. As you can probably guess, there are tears, laughter and drama galore. The move is set in Chinquapin Parish, a small southern town in rural Louisiana. My Mise-en-scene analysis is on American Beauty on page 217: number 1(The dinner scene). The frame itself is a very closed, tight shot; there is no way for the characters to escape and they're left with only confronting each other in this very little space. The shot of the camera isn't necessarily far away or close either. It's neutral, and we can see the full action of the family's dinner conversation happening right in front of us. The movie I decided to analyze for this course was American History X (1998), which stars Edward Norton. Though this movie isn’t widely known, it is one of the more interesting movies I have seen. It’s probably one of the best films that depict the Neo Nazi plague on American culture. The film takes place from the mid to late 1990’s during the Internet boom, and touches on subjects from affirmative action to Rodney King. One of the highlights of this movie that really relates to one of the key aspects of this course is the deterrence of capital punishment. Edward Norton’s portrayal as the grief stricken older brother who turns to racist ideologies and violence to cope with his fathers death, completely disregards the consequences of his actions as he brutally murders someone in front of his family for trying to steal his car. The unstable mentality that he developed after his father’s death really goes hand-to-hand specifically with Isaac Ehrlich’s study of capital punishment and deterrence. Although this movie is entirely fictional, a lot of the central themes (racism, crime punishment, gang pervasiveness, and one’s own vulnerability) are accurate representations of the very problems that essentially afflict us as a society.

In the film adaption of Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee, with the help of Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, expands certain scenes in the screenplay in order to shed more light into the lives of the two main characters. Lee directly parallels the Thanksgiving dinner scenes of Jack and Ennis to contrast each character’s status in their lives outside of Brokeback Mountain while also using these family scenes as a reminder of Jack and Ennis’ other lives. These Thanksgiving scenes represent a shift in power; Ennis is no longer the calm and composed one with a handle on his life—Jack is now the one who is starting to feel more secure in his life. By juxtaposing the two scenes, Lee illustrates the strong friction of Jack and Ennis’ realities following the sudden shift in their relationship after Jack drives over after hearing about Ennis’ divorce. Because Annie Proulx focuses on Ennis’ life and his regrets, we are unable to understand Jack’s side of the story. The film, however, is able to expand on the idea that the divide between dreams and reality drives Jack and Ennis apart over time; in these Thanksgiving dinner scenes we see the inevitable change and consequences of their distinct beliefs.
