As the young republic grew a third revolution accompanied the reformation of American politics and the transformation of the American economy. This revolution aimed at improving the character of ordinary Americans and for this reason reform campaigns dominated the American landscape. At this time when the Great Awakening was taking place many reformers drew their zeal from religion and hoped to transform American life by getting rid of worldly evils. During this time period between 1825-1850 a tremendous surge in the spirit of reform took place in which the Temperance, Utopian, Criminal Institution, Suffragist, Abolitionist, and Public School reform movements occurred. All of these reform movements were similar as they all aimed at making the American society better. Although, many reform movements attempted to dissolve disunity in the social ladder and strove for equal rights among citizens often times they failed to include all ethnic groups. As the time period between 1825-1850 rolled on reform movements often retained ideals of conservation as some reformers believed that reform movements were disowning the past. Many Americans including those of the Know Nothing Party objected to the incursion of immigrants from Ireland and Germany. Some Americans like Samuel F.B. Morse favored a limited democratic ideal. Document D shows that Samuel F.B. Morse and Nativists were some of the people that were discontent with the Naturalization laws and they believed that a conspiracy existed that aimed to destroy the foundation of the country and if anyone doubted it then the conspiracy could be tested by altering the Naturalization laws. This was the Utopian reform movement which hoped to promote the principles of justice and equality. There was also the suffragist movement in which females declared their right to vote. According to the government all men and women were created equal and for this reason women fought for their rights. The democratic ideals tried to cut the social separation and discordance present in America mainly between the south and north sections. Originating from the Second Great Awaking with vast religious reinforcement democratic ideals spread through the new reform movements. Main movements that supported the democratic views included the Second Great Awaking revival, antislavery reform and more equal rights movements for women and men.
The Effects of American Reform Movements in the 1900s Living in the United States of America is all about opportunity. The opportunity to get a good job, make money, and lead a life of good quality; in other words, the opportunity to live, live, and live the Pursuit of Happiness. However, the opportunity for many people was not around throughout the 1800s. Certain groups of people did not hold the basic rights that were guaranteed by the Constitution. In fact, most of the people that had opportunity were the wealthy white men, and few other people ever had any chance to lead a good life.
Before the American Revolution there was the Enlightenment and Great Awakening period. The Enlightenment and Great Awakening period were different from each other but in similarities they both challenged the way society thoughts of situations in life. They both had a big impact leading towards the American Revolution and how the colonist were thinking differently from before. They were able to think outside the box and become more of a personality than a group. The Enlightenment was a philosophical, social movement that challenged the ideals of reality. They wanted reasons over faith, to establish an authoritative system. The Enlightenment gave a way for a new perspective into the world and take a scientific approach to questioning situations.
In Chapter 8 of Major Problems in American Immigration History, the topic of focus shifts from the United States proper to the expansion and creation of the so called American Empire of the late Nineteenth Century. Unlike other contemporary colonial powers, such as Britain and France, expansion beyond the coast to foreign lands was met with mixed responses. While some argued it to be a mere continuation of Manifest Destiny, others saw it as hypocritical of the democratic spirit which had come to the United States. Whatever their reasons, as United States foreign policy shifted in the direction of direct control and acquisition, it brought forth the issue of the native inhabitants of the lands which they owned and their place in American society. Despite its long history of creating states from acquired territory, the United States had no such plans for its colonies, effectively barring its native subjects from citizenship. In conclusion, there is ample evidence to support the theory that the nineteenth century Progressive movement was not a unified core of reform minded individuals. Although each sought to impose social order upon an increasingly complex and seemingly disorganized world, one group used the language of scientific management, maximum output and economic controls, while the other preached social justice, humanitarian reform and respect for the individuality of others.

The progressive movement, ignited from the depression of 1890, caused a wide gap between the rich and the poor. Progressives sought to aid the poor and believed that the government is to successfully fill its devoted right to “promoting the general welfare.” Their goal was to stop corrupt politicians and ignite the government to be more efficient. From this, the progressive movement formed political reforms in order for the “people” to be heard. They wanted the rise of direct democracy, in which the people would vote for the senators, not the state legislatures. The American Revolution marked the divorce of the British Empire and its one of the most valued colonies. Behind the independence that America had fought so hard for, there emerged a diverging society that was eager to embrace new doctrines. The ideals in the revolution that motivated the people to fight for freedom continued to influence American society well beyond the colonial period. For example, the ideas borrowed from John Locke about the natural rights of man was extended in an unsuccessful effort to include women and slaves. The creation of state governments and the search for a national government were the first steps that Americans took to experiment with their own system. Expansion, postwar depression as well as the new distribution of land were all evidence that pointed to the gradual maturing of the economic system. Although America was fast on its way to becoming a strong and powerful nation, the underlying issues brought about by the Revolution remained an important part in the social, political and economical developments that in some instances contradicted revolutionary principles in the period from 1775-1800.

It is quite ironic that these "nativists" came to America for the same reasons as the immigrants who came in the time period of 1880-1925; however, they do not accept the immigrants who came in that period, just as they had once wanted to be accepted. Emma Lazarus’ "The New Colossus", which is on the Statue of Liberty, reads "Give me you tired, your poor, Your huddled mass yearning to breathe free," but in fact, many Americans, nativists, did not want these poor, huddled mass at all.
