The movement of people is one of the main characteristics of the globalized world. National borders continue to restrict international migration, but many agree that the process of economic globalization and the gradual decline of the territorial state are now accompanied with the growth of migration. Whereas for some of us the world indeed has become a “smaller place”, and our passports let us travel to any spot on the map for business and pleasure without any hurdles, for many, mostly for the people from the Global South, there are still many obstacles in their way before they can leave their countries. At the same time with the development of technology and the media delivering bright images of the Western life to everyone’s TV and computer …show more content…
Some people tend to sympathize with undocumented immigrants and view them as people fleeing from poverty and crime in their home countries. Their opponents have demonized illegal immigrants and view them as a threat and a burden on the state. Research shows, that undocumented immigrants see themselves as law-abiding individuals, despite their violation of the immigration laws and believe that they benefit the countries they come to. The term “illegal immigrant” itself, has become emotionally charged, and many seem to avoid it, using “undocumented” or “unauthorized” immigrant instead. For the purpose of this paper we will use these terms …show more content…
According to this report, the unauthorized immigrant population in the US totaled 11.5 million in 2011. Although undocumented immigrants come to the United States from all countries of the world, Mexico has been the leading source country of undocumented immigration, with 6.8 million unauthorized immigrants, representing 59 percent of the unauthorized population coming in 2011 .
There are many reasons for the influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico to the United States. These include the territorial proximity and significant difference in the quality of life between two countries as well as the demand for undocumented labor north of the border. Most of the undocumented immigrants are economic migrants coming here to find a better life through low paying agricultural, construction or service industry work throughout the United
Immigration reform has been one of the “hot” topics that have been consistently at the forefront of many American discussions. At this time, there are more illegal immigrants in our country than legal immigrants. This is a major controversy in the realm of other social policies. Illegal immigration, or undocumented immigrants, refers to foreign people entering the United States without government permission or violating the immigration law. This is typically done by sneaking into the country or staying beyond the allotted time frame.
There are two category’s in today’s society Those who oppose illegal immigration and want the immigrants to be forced back to their originating countries. Those who oppose illegal immigration but would prefer that illegal immigrants that reside within the United States are granted citizenship options. There are obviously quite a number of people that are opposed to illegal immigration. Almost all of us can say we are children of immigrants Many immigrants risk their lives to reach the United States so that they may provide their families a better life. Some immigration supporters also feel that the risks the immigrants take to get here are far too great. They feel the United States government is placing these individual 's lives at risk by

There are three different types of illegal immigrants: fraudulent entrants, visa abusers, and those who enter without inspection (EWIs). Eighty percent of illegals run the border and are known as EWIs (Anderson 54). When people hear the term “illegal immigrant” this is the type people typically think of. Some illegal immigrants are "visa abusers" who overstay their visas (Anderson 54). The Department of Homeland Security estimates that 300,000 people overstay their visas every year (Marcovitz 30). The other type of illegal alien is a "fraudulent entrant" who pays a fortune for forged documents (Anderson 55). Because illegals usually have very little money, this method is the...
Immigration has always been a hot topic in America. There are many pros and cons, which makes it a delicate issue when it comes to debates. In an attempt to reform immigration, President Obama has issued an executive order that will overhaul the nation’s immigration system as we know it. The president’s changes will affect nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants who are currently residing in America. Focusing on 4 main changes, Obamas’ plan focuses on many aspects from enhancing border security to developing new processes in which workers can enter the country.
Many people have come to America for a better life and to get away from all the troubles of their homeland. These immigrants, like those throughout U.S. history, are generally hard workers and make important contributions to the economy through their productive labor and purchasing power. America is considered a melting pot of many diffrent ethinic group. Immigrants should be able to enter America with little if any resistance from any border patrol. Immigrants in america take the low paying, hard labor jobs that , unfortunately, some americans don't want.
Most of these immigrants come from Mexico, the Philippines, Korea, and the Caribbean. The immigration act of 1965 made it easier for third world immigrants to enter the country because it gave preference to immigrants with family member already established in the U.S. The United States is considered to be the “land of opportunity” so immigrants enter the states looking for employment, money, and a better way of living. A major concern for Americans is whether or not immigrants take jobs away from them or they just do the jobs most Americans wouldn 't do. Immigration has always been an issue in the United States and is often portrayed as harmful and as a major threat to American culture. The influx of immigrants was always encouraged because it was believed that if the immigrant spread out among the population it would guarantee they would assimilate. Mexico has the largest number of people coming in than any other country. Mexican American are highly concentrated in the Southwest making it difficult for them to assimilate since, they 're surrounded by other people of the same race and culture. Assimilating to a new culture isn 't always easy. Mexican and other third world immigrants are often accused of resisting assimilation. Patrick Buchanan is a strong believer that immigrants are harming the U.S economically and also culturally. He claims that immigrants threaten the American culture and that they are going to be
Reny and Manzano anticipate that by the year 2042, the Latino population in the United States will “reach a historic milestone as the White, non-Hispanic population drops below 50% of the total” (195). The changing demographic has triggered varying responses and reactions including welcomes, discrimination and prejudices formed about the Latino immigrants, and even vitriolic diatribes. The Latino immigration is often constructed as a threat to the social and legal fabric so much so that political wins have come off of it. Even as the Latino immigrants try to build their lives in academia and other professions, they continue to face stereotypes often stoked by the media “as law-breaking, permanent foreigners” (Reny and Manzano 195).
In 2013, 83 percent of undocumented immigrants deported from the United States were not given a hearing before a judge. The United States spends $1.84 billion detaining undocumented immigrants (www.ACLU.org). Immigrants have an incredibly difficult time becoming a citizen; the process can take years to complete. The process is also a costly $1,450, which can be hard to obtain for undocumented immigrants. More rights should be granted to immigrants, along with an easier gateway to become a citizen.

The United States of America, being a country founded by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Matt O’Brien stated in his article “The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007.”(Para, 2) While some argue that illegal immigrants burden the United States of America and its economy, others believe that they have become essential and are an important part of the US, economy.
The distance between the new arrivals and the natives fosters a sense of distrust on both ends. However, the concern that the growing population of immigrants will compromise America’s national identity undermines our national reality. Historically, those who have willingly immigrated to the United States have had a desire to become part of American society, crossing borders and seas t...
In the United States, there are approximately 10 million illegal immigrants: 62% are Mexicans, 12% come from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, and 6% come from Philippines, India and South Korea (Richwine). There are many reasons why people cross the border each day, such as escaping violence, having a better life, or getting new opportunities, but there are also many reasons why illegal immigrants represent a problem for the country. Illegal Immigration can occur for various reasons but one of the main causes over years has been civil wars which made people cross borders of other countries. One more factor can be poverty where people migrate from other countries legally or illegally to higher paid jobs, better living conditions and one of the main examples of these are thousands of people who apply for H1-B (highly skilled workers) every year to legally work for a company in America. Another factor could be persecution in their own country for person’s wrong doing in religious or political beliefs and fleeing to adjacent country to take sanctuary. According to Anderson, immigrants come to America from neighboring countries especially Mexico to benefit fr...
