Motivational paper I always think about what kind of teacher I should become. I am trying to obtain an answer after I read these two books. First time when I read Drive, I think it has no influences on me, and I define this book as an unuseful one. When I finish read this book, I change my idea.
The book Drive presents tips to improve individuals and teams performance with full of enthusiasm for the work in the 21st century. The secret of success is neither the early operating system motivation 1.0 for survive, nor the pursuit of reward. As the author mentioned in the book, people start to dominate their own lives, develop their ability and yearn more meaningful future. From elementary school to high school, I did not have enough autonomy as a child and a student. My parents and teachers though they have responsibilities to teach me and tell me what is my future. It always happened in China. Even when I felt more stress and unfree, I would like to become a bird. When I was a college student, I saw my parents start to change the rule. They tried to encourage me make a decision by myself, because they believed I have abilities to solve problems. They supported me to go abroad and study in here. As a graduate student, professors provide enough freedom to students’ research and study. I can choose where, when and what I want to study, and it improves me to work harder. For the mastery, as I noticed, college begins in kindergarten is wrong. Students will continue to upgrade their knowledge with their progress, because they want to become better people. However, a suitable challenge is sufficient to enable them to grow and increase their enthusiasm for learning. Conversely, ambitious goals will make them lose confidence. I think people must rise with the occasion, not rise to it. The purpose is changing through grow up. When I was a kid, I did not have purpose, I just would like to be a little baby stay with my mom and dad. I can clearly remember, when I was twelve years old, my purpose was to grow up quickly, it means more freedom and stay with friends. And now, I change my purpose. I would like to find a good job and protect my parents. I asked myself, what drives me to change my purpose, and I think the answer is my experience and social environment. The purpose of higher education is that it fosters and produces the skills and knowledge for individual self-growth, drives innovation, and challenges societal norms (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2011). For an individual student, higher education is seen as a place that cultural capital is obtained or challenge, in which students are able to reconstruct their identity in society (Corey et al. 2011). Self-growth for an individual is not only limit to cultural or social growth, but also pertains to career exploration through the courses and the work related experience they are exposed to in higher education. It is hard to attain a professional career, thus, some job requires vocational courses composed of skilled and experienced laborers. The professionals pass through various challenges for them to achieve their professions’ education. Was it simple? Prosperously, there are bunches of ways to accomplish the education of each individual.
Throughout history, motivation has been one of the components to survival. Motivation is needed to get up in the morning and go on about the day in order to survive. As humans began to evolve, so did society, which meant our drive and motivation were derived from different goals rather than one common one. Rather than depending on biological drive, humans started to depend on the system of rewarding the good behavior and punishing the bad. This operating is known as Motivation 2.0 (Pink, 2009). However, this method is flawed due to the fact that this implies that humans are no different from a herd of livestock.
High school inundates students with memorization tasks and assignments that will just maybe provide enough practice to utilize the info on an upcoming test, however, there is so much emphasis and strain in those areas early on because self-discovery is reserved for the generally more mature young adults pursuing a post-secondary education that “should help students discover what they love to do” (Source B). The idea that college should serve as a staging ground for obtaining a realization of one’s purpose in humanity’s future is not simply a purely idealistic concept, on the contrary, it is expounded upon in testimonials by many college students; they can explicitly identify a new sense of direction carved out in their college years as genuine enlightenment towards where their dreams truly lie. Graduates from four-year colleges have journeyed through the peaks and troughs of undergraduate programs and can testify towards this, as in a sample of graduates surveyed “69%” expressed that college was “very useful in helping them grow and mature as a person” (Source F). Developing such self-knowledge of one’s mental processes, whether of enjoyment and dislike or the preferred type of learning, introspection is the window that provides a clear view of what one would willingly strive towards as an adult. Blindly following a career or “calling” via ignorance and inexperience is like hunting for gold in a minefield with a metal detector: sure everything may seem like treasure, but without deeper analysis the extensive path dug may only turn up catastrophe. "The more we know the world around us, the more successful we will be." This quote, from the introduction of my high school chemistry book, was my driving force as a teenager to attend college. My expectations of college were to gain insight into a world that I had not yet discovered. I had high aspirations of receiving a good education and obtaining a good job when I graduated. But four years later when graduation day arrived, I felt unfulfilled. In evaluating my education, I realized that I learned how to get good, but not great grades. I learned how to study to make the most of my time. The focus I shared with many of my peers was not always to appreciate the information received, but rather, to value the counsel from someone else who previously took that professor's class and maybe to be lucky enough to get a hold of last semester's examinations. Basically, I acquired useful skills for any job: to follow directions, to give the boss what he or she was asking of me, and to network and gain insight from other colleagues. It was still disturbing to me that after four years of schooling, I felt I had not received the education I initially expected. Overall, college does not bring out the full academic potential of the students who invest the time and money into an education. Teachers need to set aside their biases and restructure and develop curriculum, as well as student-teacher relationships, in order to truly develop college students into freethinking, exploratory people.
One of the many opportunities we have in the United States today is access to an education. I believe that being educated by teachers is very important. There are many benefits for pursuing a college degree. A few valuable advantages of higher education are African-Americans (and other minorities), like me, are able to be educated, job security, and a great salary. When I was growing up, my mom always let my siblings and I know the importance of education. For example, if I did not know the meaning of a word, my mom would say, “Look it up in the dictionary.” This taught me to read and research information instead of asking my mom for the answer.
