Growing up and being raised by his grandmother, Langston Hughes drew from her wisdom and life struggles. His mother had moved from place to place as she tried to raise her son and maybe could not support him with the little money she may have received. His father had left after one year of marriage to his mother. His mother allowed her mother to raise him and help provide for his needs. Chaim Shapiro was born in Lomza, Poland. On September 1st, 1939, the Germans invade Poland, quickly annihilating many of the people, including his younger brother Nosson. Soon after the Soviet Union signs a treaty the Germans, giving over Poland to them. Out of fear that he would lose his religion under atheist communist rulership, his mother pleads with him to leave, saying the fateful words “Go My Son.” He leaves war-torn Poland for Vilna, Lithuania, joining with the rest of the Kamenetz Yeshiva. Because of the frequent casualties of war people were forced to move from place to place for safety, because of which he eventually finds himself alone on a train bound Moscow, deep within the Soviet Union. Upon arrival he is sent to work repairing tractors in a small backward village called Karobka, in the Booyan region.

He felt a part of the black community, because he was surrounded by mostly black his whole life. His had Native American, White American and African American mixed in his bloodline, but after the separation of his parent his lived with his African American grandmother. He had to deal with a lot growing up with his family being torn apart and also being a biracial child. He felt as though he was too white to be with African Americans, but too black to be with Caucasians. Due to this miscegenation, he wrote the poem “Cross”, which was dealing with his multiracial family (69). Overall, he had a very lonesome childhood.
