The saying goes “better safe than sorry”. But when was the last time you checked how safe is the State you live in? With the national crime rate increasing over 1% annually, crime remains a big concern for many States in the US. Every year, the FBI compiles statistics of crime in the United States and the most violent of them include murder, robbery, rape and aggravated assault. With Tennessee and Nevada topping the list of most dangerous States, it’s always best to identity where you would be most vulnerable.

10. Oklahoma
FBI statistics gathered from UCR indicate that in 2014, there was a notable increase in crimes like aggravated assaults and forcible rape in the State of Oklahoma. Possible reasons include poverty and gang related issues. High crime rates in Oklahoma in 2014 can also be attributed to a lower level of education with less than 25% of the residents having a bachelor’s degree.
9. Maryland
In 2014, Maryland improved its reputation by reducing the annual crime rate by over 2%. Factors contributing to this reduction in crime are lower poverty rate which has helped in improving the situation. The rate of other violent crimes has fallen however high rate of aggravated assault including murder and homicide prevailing in Maryland keeps it on number 9 of the Top 10 Most Dangerous States in US 2014.

1. Tennessee
Before being known for Elvis Presley or country music, Tennessee’s roots go back to 12,000 years ago when Paleo-Indians inhabited this area before becoming the 16th state in 1796. Topping the list of the most dangerous states in US in 2014, Tennessee has the country’s worst violent crime rate. With over 40,000 violent crimes in 2014, the state’s crime rate appears to be climbing higher. Statistics reveal that Tennessee’s metropolitan areas like Memphis and Nashville are major hubs of crime. Like other states in this list, major contributing factors of higher crime rates in Tennessee appear to be poverty and low education levels.
Unlike many students who go to the Apache Junction campus at Central Arizona College, I live much farther out in then Apache Junction. I currently live in Gilbert Arizona. According to NeigborhoodScout, “Gilbert is a relatively large town located in the state of Arizona. With a population of 214,264 people and 44 constituent neighborhoods, Gilbert is the seventh largest community in Arizona.” (Location Inc, 2014) So, with a substantial amount of residents that live in Gilbert, one might think that there would be more crime in the area. But in actuality, that is not the case. According to NeighborhoodScout, Gilbert has one of the lowest crime rates in the state of Arizona. The rate of violent crimes in Gilbert, Arizona is 0.96 crimes per 1,000 residents. This crime rate is much lower than the crime rate of the state of Arizona, which sits at 4.29 crimes per 1000 residents. It also sits lower then the national median rate for violent crimes, which is 3.9 crimes per 1000 residents. When it comes to violent crimes, there have been only been 5 murders, 19 rapes, 59 robberies, and 122 assaults. The chance of someone becoming a victim of a violent crime in Gilbert is about 1 in 1045 chance, compared to the state of Arizona, which is 1 in 233 chance. When it comes to the rate of property crimes, Gilbert once again ranks lower then the State of Arizona and lower then the national median. The rate of property crimes in Gilbert is 15.80 crimes per 1000 residents. Which is lower then the state of Arizona, which sits at 35.39 crimes per 1000 residents, and lower then the national median of 28.6 crimes per 1000 residents. If the homicide rates don't continue to decline, the beautiful city of Indianapolis will not just be known for sports and amenities but criminal homicides as well. However, this has changed tremendously over the past four years. The Department of Public Safety Crime Analysis section (DPS CAS) released the criminal homicide statistic rates for the years of 2007-2010. These statistical rates pack a hard punch, for the criminal homicides which took place in 2007 and 2008 which, broke even both years resulting in 114 homicides for those two years. The homicide rate for the year of 2009 is at 100 and for 2010 the homicide rate is at 94. There's also a current year to date statistic chart from, The Department of Public Safety Crime Analysis Office which states that, there has been 81 homicides in Indianapolis so far from the dates of January 1, 2011 to October 8, 2011. Hopefully, the criminal homicide numbers will continue to decrease as the year’s progress (DPS CAS, 2011).
When the City of Atlanta is mentioned, individuals automatically associate the city with its positive attributes, such as, the beautiful lights, family activities and tourist attractions. The crime that occurs often goes unmentioned; however, it is increasingly becoming an issue. Forbes ranked Atlanta as the sixth most dangerous city in the US with a violent crime rate of 1,433 per 100,000 residents. The city’s crime rate correlates with its poverty levels and low education rates. Beccaria’s believed punishment should be swift, severe and certain. However, Beccaria’s ideas are often difficult to execute properly.

There was a decline in crime during the 1990s. Our country enjoyed seven years of declining crime for the period 1991-98, the most recent data available. During this period crime declined by 22% and violent crime by 25%. These are welcome developments, particularly following the surge of crime and violence of the late 1980s. This decline occurred during a time when the national prison population has increased substantially, rising from 789,60 in 1991 to 1,252,830, a 59% rise in just seven years and a 47% increase in the rate of incarceration, taking into account changes in the national population (Mauer 21-24).

Gangs are a problem in nearly every state and 83 percent of the largest cities in the United States. The problem of gangs and their negative impact on the communities they exist in continues to grow and nothing seems to be able to stop this powerful growth. Gangs not only exist in just inner cities anymore, but in towns and suburban communities as well. Gangs are affecting more and more children everyday, and this problem needs to be stopped.
Looking back at the number of homicides in the city of San Jose, CA for the year 2000 it was 20, then there was an average increase of 8 murders per year for the next 8 years. Then in 2010, despite a population increase of over one hundred thousand people, there were only 20 murders in the city of San Jose. Now in 2011, up to the month of July, there have been 26 homicides, which means based upon the current rate San Jose is on track to have more than 50 homicides in 2011, which would theoretically be over a two decade maximum. Now despite having lived in a small town, I consider San Jose as a home away from home because I go there often. I have had a job there and my dad has worked in San Jose for 28 years. In 2009 the San Jose area was rated as the seventh safest area in the country and when that happened it made me feel thankful that my family and I have lived in such a safe area. Yet nowadays it seems like I have been reading about a different murder every week, which has caused me to ask many questions about the possible causes of this rise in murders. From the research I have done, the cause seems to be a rise in gang violence and rival gang murders. In San Jose, the two rival gangs, Norteños and Sureños, have begun to be bolder with their killings as shown with the already high and rising murder rate of 2011. Solutions must be determined in conjunction with the San Jose Police Department and governmental gang task forces to establish the best course of action to stop the continuing rise in violence (Associated Press).
So why do these cities also have the highest crime rates? And why are the crime rates dropping considerably in states like Florida where gun ownership is encouraged?
The Uniform Crime Report, which was developed in the 1930s, is commonly used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a record of crimes committed all across the United States. These crimes, which fall under two categories, Part I and Part II offenses, are reported by local police to the Federal Bureau of Investigation each year. Part I offenses are considered to be the more serious of crimes recognized by society. Such examples of this are homicide, forcible rape, robbery, arson, motor vehicle theft, etc. Part II offenses are those that are considered less serious, such as fraud, simple assault, drug abuse, gambling, stolen property, embezzlement, etc. Part I crimes can also be subdivided into what are known as violent crimes and property crimes. (Barkan, 2012). However, there are both some positive and negative aspects of this type of crime measurement. The following paper will explore the small amount of pros and numerous cons associated with the Uniform Crime Report.

Approaches to crime prevention have emerged over time and are demonstrated in different solutions, practices, and policies executed by law enforcement, courts, corrections, family, and community. Some of the dominant approaches to crime prevention currently used by law enforcement, courts, corrections, family, and community are: situational crime prevention, crime prevention through social development, crime prevention through environmental design, community crime prevention, reduction of recidivism, and policing. In this essay, I will compare and contrast the dominant approaches used for crime prevention and analyze which approaches are most effective. I will identify and apply at least four approaches used in law enforcement, legislation, courts, corrections, family, and community within the crime prevention programs.
The U.S. Department of Labor (2011) reported the national average of unemployment for 2008 was 5.8 percent. The rate dramatically increased in 2009 with an average of 9.3 percent and 9.6 percent for 2010. While unemployment rates have increased, the FBI’s preliminary reports for 2010 show that law enforcement agencies across the U.S. have reported a decrease of 6.2 percent in the number of violent crimes for the first 6 months of 2010 when compared to figures reported for the same time in 2009. The violent crime category includes rape, murder, robbery, and aggravated result. The number of property crimes also decreased 2.8 percent when compared to the same time last year. Property crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. Arson decreased 14.6 percent when compared to the same time periods of 2009 (FBI, 2011).
