Money Should Not Be Given as An Incentive to Donate Organs

Organ donation is when a donor with a healthy functioning organ gives a person who has a failing organ their organ; organ donation can occur when the donor is living, but certain organs-such as a heart-requires the donor to be deceased. Organ donation is a topic that is very important because it deals with whether people live or die, and it doesn't help that the amount of recipients for organs is greater than the amount of donors. According to Brian Hansen's Organ Shortage it's stated that about 115 people are added a day to the 80,700 people who are in need of organs, and of these people only 66 people a day actually gets organs (155). This means that the amount of people waiting for organs surpass the amount of organs readily available. There are many ideas about how to increase the amount of donors such as increasing awareness, using organs from animals, awarding organ donors with medals, and many other alternatives. Another idea to increase organ donation is providing donors or donor's families-if deceased-with incentives. Although giving incentives is a way to stimulate donation money should not be given as an incentive. Money should not be used as an incentive because it would cause recipients to pay the organ donor. If money was to be given to the donors for there organs eventually the charge would trickle down to the recipients. An example of the charge trickling down would be the government paying the donors for their donation. In return the government could change insurance to where insurance has to pay more for those who need organs. As an effect to the charge the insurance companies would raise the insurance cost of organ recipients. This would be bad because not only are the organ recipients lives on the line, mos... ... middle of paper ... ...needs to be. Giving an incentive to donors is a good idea because it rewards the donor for doing a good deed. Incentives also give the donor the feeling as though their generosity is appreciated. Giving these feelings and tangible incentives to people is a great way to increase donation because it's an idea of giving back to the giver. However, money should not be the object given back because it hold such a high value in this society. This can be seen through the media and can be seen through all the ways people try to get money. Being that money has such a high value and organs are in such high demand, people would be wiling to do anything to get an organ to get the money. People might even forget about trying to help someone else out by giving an organ and instead skip straight over to the money and that's why any other incentive except money should be given.
