Money, money, money... That is all I hear about these days. As children, we should not grow up always being stressed about having enough money to eat dinner. When I was a kid, I always thought everything was way worse than it actually was. If my parents complained about money I assumed we were gonna lose our house. They over exaggerate about money; they made it sound like we were broke, even though we were fine. My parents should quit worrying about money and focus more on living life. Holidays are the most stressful money wise. My parents have to spend money on food and a ton of presents. Plus, we travel to both of my grandparents’ house every holiday and that 's a lot of money towards gas. On thanksgiving a couple years ago we had to drive to my dads, moms for lunch and my mom 's mom for dinner. That was a total of five hours in a car with cranky and hungry people. When I go shopping with my mom, we always head straight for clearances. It probably is good to be raised to save money you could say, but when I was in high school everyone was judging what everyone wore. It was always hard to get judgmental looks from other girls. That is when I started saving my money and buying a lot of my own clothes. My mom does still pay for my clothes when I go shopping with her, but I feel bad making her pay. One time I was at the store with my mom because I needed new jeans. It’s hard to shop for me with my awkward long but skinny body so it gets frustrating trying on ten different pairs of jeans.After about twenty minutes I finally found a few pairs that fit me. I felt bad making my mom pay so we argued for about five minutes over who was paying. While the idea of money as being so important in daily life in the modern era is not a concept that is given much thought, it is very important to realize that this is not exactly a new concept. It was as important during the medieval period in the time of Saint Francis of Assisi. Wealth, in many cases of modern times and medieval is seen as both the main factor for running the world as well as its downfall. It is something that no matter the period we as humans understand and use to classify the world in both abstract and in more literal ways.
Personally, I look and strive for money because what else is a teenager supposed to do without money. So learning about what others believe about money is something that strikes me and challenges me to think differently. With many having this perspective on money, Morrie and my interviewees remind me that there is more to life than just money. My father said that money was his motivation at a young age, but believed that money should be something that we should work for (Personal Interview). My grandfather on the other hand believed that money was an evil. He also believes that money should be put towards things that matter and not things that you want (Personal Interview). This leads me into what Morrie believed about money. “You don’t need the latest sports car, you don’t need the biggest house. The truth is, you don’t get satisfaction from those things” (36). It can also be a very humbling and embarrassing experience. I buy new blue jeans as seldom as possible because the experience is so humiliating. For every pair that looks good on me, 15 look grotesque. I remember one of my first shopping trips with my mom. I was so excited to spend time with her and share this experience with her. We were at Walmart and made our way to the junior department and I started picking out clothes. At twelve years old I had more of a womanly shape as opposed to a normal twelve year girl. Holiday shopping, for me, is a nightmare because of the abundance of crowds, all of the fighting and competitiveness. I believe those last minute shoppers are the worst, they are the ones that are rude and impatient. For some people, with lots of patience, dealing with holiday shoppers is a good experience. For people like me, who has very little patience, it is a dreadful experience. Another aspect of shopping during the holidays is dealing with tired, overworked and frustrated employees. They are just trying to get their jobs done as quickly as possible, so they can go home to their families. Meanwhile, you have those employees that are cheerful and are eager to help the distraught shoppers. Also, during the holidays horrible accidents can occur often at this time of year. I am going to portray the dangers and mishaps that can occur during the holidays. I am not anti-holiday, but the older I get the more I don't have any desire to be exposed to all of the potential chaos.
