Equality Doesn’t Exist America is a very versatile country. Each person plays a unique important role to our society, these roles are called statuses. A status is something that defines you, your social classification. According to Sociology, there are three types of statuses a person can obtain. First, ascribed status. An ascribed status is something you are born with, such as being born a female. This would give you the ascribed status of being female, which could lead into other ascribed statuses, like mother, and sister. Second, achieved status. This is opposite to ascribed and is something you obtain. Achieved is a status you gain through effort or choice. Following the example given above of being a female, you could have an achieved status of being a wife. Third and lastly, socioeconomic status. This is measured by income, occupation, education, neighborhood, and political power. Another factor in this that will be discussed is the influence of race and ethnicity. Race is purely genetics, whereas ethnicity is the group in which you identify with. These statuses are both a natural human response and …show more content…

My earning potential varies largely based on my sex due to the gender pay gap. Studies show that in 2014 the annual earnings of a full-time man were $53,267, while a woman’s was only $41,585. This means woman were making only 79% of what men were while working the same hours. My occupation would not definitely change, but more than likely would. I currently work two jobs, as a jewelry store sales associate and an entertainer. I go to children’s parties dressed as a Disney princess, so that job would most definitely change. However it is possible for a man to work my position as sales associate, though it would be much less likely. Our current faculty ratio of men to women is 12:1, and he is our owner, making his job description vary
