Modern Comedy Criteria: The Intern
The movie I will be evaluating is a comedy film titled The Intern. It includes well-known actors like Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. This film is about a 70-year-old widower named Ben Whittaker. He takes the chance to become a senior intern at an online fashion site after being a retired marketing executive for quite some time, Ben is looking for something to keep him busy. Whittaker doesn’t hit it off right away but he soon becomes popular amongst his younger co-workers as well as his boss Jules Ostin. His friendliness and wisdom help him develop a close friendship with Jules and her family. Modern comedy movies are somewhat predictable now a days, the criteria they usually follow have relatable humor, dirty humor, acting ability, unrealistic situations, exaggerated plot, conflicts and happy endings. Throughout this essay I will summarize the film as well as determine if the criteria stated has similarities with the film. Also, arguing that although this film doesn’t have very similar criteria with modern comedy films, it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
This film’s main character is 70-year-old Ben Whittaker, he is recently widowed and has been retired for some time. He has a lot of free time on his hands which sparks his interest in finding a part time job. He sees a flyer while out buying groceries that talks about the chance to become a senior intern for an online fashion site. Following the flyers instructions, he films an interview using an old fashioned camcorder, and submits it. He is later called in for an in person interview where he shows up wearing professional clothing and even a briefcase. He walks up to a desk where he is told by a women who is half his age to wait in the wai...

...y or stop watching all together. This movie hints at sexual humor but does it in a mature manner. This may be because the target audience is directed more toward older adults, nonetheless I would like to see this exercised in more films. This film is likeable because it goes against what we’ve grown used to as far as comedic movies go. It demonstrates relatable humor, giving you ultimately a feeling of connection with the characters, also the acting talent is so accurate you at times actually feel sorry or even happy for the characters. Although this movies main purpose is to make you laugh, one can learn life lessons from this movie. For example you should always keep your charm, and stay humble during stressful times. Although it is a comedic film, it discusses real conflicts seen in people’s lives and gives a good name to the movie genre, comedy.

Divine Comedy – Pagans in Paradise Essay

- Divine Comedy – Pagans in Paradise In the beginning when God created humanity, it was said that He created all humans in His image of goodness (Genesis 1:27). Dante then adds in his Divine Comedy that God has instilled a certain predetermined capacity of goodness in each human being as He wills, which should be utilized fully during life (Paradise 3:84). It would then be assumed, in Dantean thought, that all humans have the choice to live fully to this capacity and assume a place in heaven upon death, to fail to utilize this capacity and suffer in Hell for eternity, or to sin and seek repentance at some point in their lives, allowing them to enter Purgatory....   [tags: Divine Comedy]
