Misty Copeland
Classical ballet is a traditional and a formal style that required a vigorous technique such as pointe work and turnout of the legs. Ballet can be combined with other types of music and movement like hip hop, jazz, tap and more. I believe that ballet is an elegant and flowing dance that can be combined with music and body movements. One of my favorite ballet dancer is Misty Copeland. She learned ballet very quickly when she stared, one technique that takes long time to learn is pointe, which is to support all the body weight in your feet, and Copeland learned to do it in just of three months.

When she began, one dance company told her that she could not make it as a ballet dancer, but they were wrong Misty did believe in herself and she keeps looking for what she dreamed of. I chose to talk about her because she has a persistent and motivated story. Misty is innovated person even thought that she lived in a motel she knew how to train without resources, well she used the balcony bars to practice her ballet lesson. That show it was awesome, I wish that one day I can go to see her at the theater. The Swan Lake is a beautiful history that comes with magic and romance to the scene and Misty Copeland knew how to interpreted that show with elegance and her own magic movements. Also, she very persistent because she had told that she won’t have a successful career, but she is not payed attention what the other ballerinas said about her, such as, they said that her muscles were too big that she doesn’t have the body of the classical ballet ballerina, she mentions in one of the interviews that she felt like a ballerina and she believes in herself. Misty Copeland changed the view of the classical ballerina in the world because all classical principle ballerinas are white. Also, she believes in her root of the African American community, one of the first starring role was the mystical Firebird, African American community was in there to support her, that day she broke her leg, and she did not pay attention to that because she knew what she represents to
Abby Lee Miller’s mom Maryen Lorrain Miller was the start of Abby’s career in the dance world. Maryen started the ALDC and once Maryen got older, Abby learned the tricks and trades of the dance world and took over the business. Abby improved the dance company into a well known dance company.
Her lasting career was not given to her easily, therefore, creating an inspiring story full of hardships and success. Ever since she was a little girl, her dream was to become a successful and famous dancer. In New York City, when she was trying to fulfill her dream, she was unable to find a job in the theatre department. Instead of being discouraged, she decided to make something good come from it. She choreographed her own routines, created her own costumes, and organized solo recitals for audiences to enjoy. This event led her to the biggest adventure in her life that would later impact the world. She was invited to return back to London to pursue her education in the performing arts, so that she could further improve her talents that would make up her entire career.
Large sets and traditional tutus gave way to clean stages and plain leotards. This simplified external style allowed for the dancers’ movement to become the main artistic medium, which is the hallmark of neoclassical ballet. In neoclassical ballet, there are more varieties to work with and the costumes too it will not be just a traditional tutu. In addition, neoclassical ballet is much more bias towards the contemporary dance side which means more freedom than structure. While in ballet, The vocabularies are very structured for instance a grand jeté has to have both legs straightened, pointed and turned-out. Although neoclassical requires some of these techniques too but the movement are not so restricted. At eleven years old, she was discovered by Gus Edwards and performed in a dinner show called the Vaudeville Kiddie Revue. In her teenage years she could often be found dancing in clubs. Then, she started auditioning for Broadway shows. The reason she started tap dancing was because the fact that every audition she went to, she was asked to tap dance. So, she enrolled in the Jack Donahue School in New York. After her first class, she didn’t want to come back because she felt so behind. Jack called her and told her to come back, so she did. By her seventh lesson, she was finally getting good.
Katherine Dunham was an important figure in pushing for equality among all races. She became remembered through the unique twist she put on her ballet movements. Instead of pursuing traditional ballet, she choreographed ballets that incorporated African-American movements. Because of this, she has always been referred to as one of the “modern dance pioneers” (Cass 303). Even through struggles, she continued to strive to focus more on the dance traditions of other cultures and slowly help work towards the end of oppression towards particular races.

The stage that hosted the creation of illusion for those attending ballet after 1827 in its “golden age” (Guest, 1) introduced a new world, but one that could not be reached. These illusions were expressed through performance as “moods of Romanticism.” (5) The Romantic period of the early 19th century emphasized the alienation of an individual, the spectacle of that isolation, and the Romantic ideal that perfection remains mysterious and unattainable, as opposed to the late 18th century’s Enlightenment ideals that held rationality and tangible beings most profound. The spectacle of an estranged, supernatural being embodies these elements of Romanticism, as was represented in Romantic ballet. Coralli and Perrot’s 1841 ballet, Giselle, incorporated these Romantic elements into “each one of (the ballet’s) component parts - scenic design…choreography and dance style” (7), as well as with innovations in narrative. These narratives began to project women as powerful representations of the ethereal, supernatural being, as is specifically shown in the character of Giselle in Coralli and Perrot’s ballet. Through the novelties of Romantic visual presentation in scenery, movement, and narrative, the golden age of ballet was able to effectively “(reveal) the unattainable” (7) and supernatural.
The new dancers wanted their movements to be authentic and to tell a story. An example of this is Isadora Duncan, a dancer and choreographer of the 20th century, when “in 1904 [she] established a school in Grunewald, Germany (and others in France and Russia), in which pupils were trained through gymnastic exercises and encouraged to express themselves through movement” (Kassing). In my opinion this book was and is amazing. I would definitely read this book again and I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is perfect for anybody to read but dancers will connect to the book really well and enjoy it. Taking Flight is also an amazing adoption story. I know how hard it is for a kid to move from one country to another and have to learn a different language and different culture. It is difficult for kids to get use to a new place and for Michaela to get use to and learn decent English as fast as she did is amazing. Taking Flight is over all a terrific and eye opening book. I think everyone should read it and don't judge this book just because she is a ballerina, read it for the cultural side and the history side.
Overall, Isadora Duncan was an amazing and revolutionary person. She discovered intense emotions and a strong spirituality within herself, within her soul. She transformed her discoveries into a dance in order to share it with the world.
The fine art of modern dance is like many other fields in that it is based on the actions and deeds of those who were pioneers in the field. These pioneers helped to mold modern dance into what it is today. Of the many people who are partially responsible for this accomplishment is Isadora Duncan. Duncan, often referred to as the “mother of modern dance,” inspired many other dancers to the extent that the art of dance would not be the same today without her many contributions.
The Black Swan is a dark movie that portrays a young, innocent woman by the name of Nina Sayer who is sheltered by her mother, who gave up her career as a dancer in order to raise her. Nina is a dedicated and hardworking dancer who spends a lot of time trying to perfect every move. However, her sexually aggressive ballet instructor reprimands her for being such a perfectionist and accuses her of a lacking a true passion for dance. When Nina is selected to play the role of the Swan Queen in the Swan Lake recital, she is ecstatic that her time and dedication has paid off. As time passed, she quickly let the role consume her life and she spiraled into many different cases of psychological disorders due to an unhealthy amount of stress.
Ballet is one of the most popular types of dance. It is known for its grace and elegance. Ballet is a very disciplined style of dance and may take many years to develop the proper technique. Ballet is the foundation for many other types of dance.
