Minimum wage legislation was first established on June 25, 1938 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt when he signed into legislation the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. “In its final form, the act applied to industries whose combined employment represented only about one-fifth of the labor force. In these industries, it banned oppressive child labor and set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and the maximum workweek at 44 hours (USDOL, 2015).” While the intended reason behind such legislation was to ban child labor and establish a minimum wage for an employee, the reach of the law surpasses this. With its latest adjustment in 2007, minimum wage has gradually increased from $5.85 per hour to $6.55 per hour in 2008 to its current rate of $7.25 beginning in 2009. Many argue this rate needs to be higher; some feel much higher. There are currently 29 states that have already adopted a minimum wage above the federal minimum wage. Additionally, there is already a current resolution to increase the current minimum wage. As outlined through the Fair Minimum Wage Act Fact Sheet, “this increase would raise the pay of at least 25 million workers nationwide, generating $35 billion in increased pay and compensation for working American families
