In America, the National Minimum Legal Drinking Age is a topic of great debate and controversy. Many people argue that the age restriction provides a safe environment for all citizens; whereas others disagree that the law creates an untrustworthy aura among teens. If the minimum legal drinking age were to be lowered, most people would be affected by it, whether it be by an increase in drunk-driving or a rise in crimes. Although teens are legally considered adults by the age of eighteen and the minimum legal drinking age prompts underage teens to exhibit risky behavior, the age restriction should not be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen because young teens would have easier access to alcohol, the minimum legal drinking age has decreased alcohol-related problems, and alcohol can cause damage to underage drinkers. In the United States, there have been a numerous amount of laws and restrictions put into place to regulate and control the use of alcohol. During the twentieth century, most states had drinking age restrictions ranging from ages eighteen to twenty-one. Many states lowered their limits to eighteen in 1971 due to the lowering of the voting age, although the states re-raised their age restrictions when they received discontent over the increase in drunk-driving accidents. Teens and alcohol are not a good mix so citizens of the United States should keep them separated as best as they can. By having a minimum age limit of twenty-one, that is a great way to do it.

Illegal alcohol consumption has been a major problem with high school students around the nation. Lowering the drinking age from twenty one would result in major consequences for America’s adolescents. By lowering the drinking age, alcohol would be more accessible to those who choose to participate in underage drinking. The desire to drink for teens and young adults between the ages of fourteen and twenty can be caused by peer pressure or an act of rebellion. One beer might not seem like a big deal at the time, but it could lead to a life of addiction and alcoholism.

In fact, teens begin to feel the effects of alcohol twice as fast as adults and are more likely to participate in “binge-drinking” (Sullivan 473). The problem is evident, but the solution may be simple. Although opponents argue lowering the drinking age could make alcohol available to some teens not mature enough to handle it, lowering the drinking age actually teaches responsibility and safety in young adults, maintains consistency in age laws, and diminishes temptation.

Despite the deep value this country places on freedom, personal liberties, and personal responsibilities, the data shows that public safety is greatly at risk if the drinking age were to be lowered to twenty-one. A variety of groups believe that the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen deeming that the twenty-one law is unconstitutional. On the opposing side, people agree that the law helps to protect our young people and the communities where they live.

Some would say the morally right decision is to not allow teens the chance to hurt themselves. Everyone is entitled to having his or her own opinions and beliefs. However, the overall health of the youth of our country seems a little more important than some personal belief. The minimum drinking age doesn’t just affect the teen safety, it also affects the safety of the general public because young adults are allowed to drive and perform other tasks that be can be dangerous to others. I agree with the logic of the argument that establishing a safe environment for drinking is an effective way to enforce alcohol safety for young people and to prevent them from irresponsible drinking. So if we can’t stop young people from drinking, it may be better to teach them how to drink safely, right? But something to consider is lowering the age to 18, could also possibly make alcohol more accessible to even younger teens. Underage drinking is a serious issue. Many youth and young adults loose their lives due to reckless drinking. The law of legal drinking has been passed to protect minors of the dangers of alcohol. The law prohibiting drinking should remain in effect and never change. Although many may disagree with the minimum age drinking age law should remain in the United States, this law benefits the country. The number of accidents caused due to binge drinking is higher. To remove the U.S. minimal drinking law of prohibiting minors under 21 from drinking would only increase the number of accidents. Minors may be more likely to consume high volumes of alcohol putting themselves and other innocent people in danger.
