It is a common notion that for music to be able to traverse and grow within different soundscapes, music must go through a form of migration. There are two different forms of migration that have been seen throughout the world’s history. The first form of migration is called Voluntary Migration. Voluntary Migration is a movement in which a group of people agree to leave their region for their own personal benefits, whether they be focused around religious or economic opportunities. Given these positive opportunities, cultures can thrive and grow and be able to create soundscapes that benefit the newly formed cultures within a positive aspect. The other form of migration that has been mention in history can be classified as Forced Migration. Forced Migration is a complete contrast to what Voluntary Migration stands for and is a movement that results in destroying cultures and soundscapes. Around the time period of the Civil War, Gospel Music started to become more and more popular within the soundscape of the south. While spiritual music focused more on traditional sense of folksongs, Gospel was drew inspiration from spiritual and focused its aesthetics on congregations and hymns with references referring back to its roots. Not only did spiritual have an effect on the progression of Gospel music, this lead to the creation of Blues and Jazz. The first appearance of jazz was at the turn of the century in New Orleans and is called “Dixieland Jazz,” or “Classic Jazz.” It developed out of music for street parades in the black community. It also had deeper roots in a style of music called “Blues,” which was used to express the daily experiences of the community (History). Other influences include the combination of West African folk music with the popular classical music of Europe, developing into syncopated rhythms and chord variations on classical pieces (Passion).
Blues has played an extreme role in todays’ music. The music genre of blues, helps us express ourselves in which you can feel it from the ubiquitous in the jazz to the blues scale and the specific chord progressions. Growing up in a southern household, I was used to listening to a variety music, but blues was always most listened to. The progression of people into and within the United States has had an essential impact on the nation, both intentionally and unintentionally. Progressions such as The Great Migration and the Second Great Migration are examples of movements that impacted the United States greatly. During these movements, African Americans migrated to flee racism and prejudice in the South, as well as to inquire jobs in industrial cities. They were unable to escape racism, but they were able to infuse their culture into American society. During the twentieth century, economic and political problems led to movements such as The Great Migration and The Second Great Migration which impacted the United States significantly.
One has to ask how Jazz and more specifically Vocal Jazz got its foundation from. Blues was a major component in Vocal Jazz, it comes from the pain, suffering and agony of African Americans along with other emotions. Vocal Jazz continued along to help express agony, but added more elevating keys and melodies to be able to give it a more diverse sound. During the 1900’s the city of New Orleans was seen as a Melting Pot for music, from blues, to church gospel, to marching bands gave life to Jazz. The influence that music has throughout the world is immeasurable. Music evokes many feelings, surfaces old memories, and creates new ones all while satisfying a sense of human emotion. With the ability to help identify a culture, as well as educate countries about other cultures, music also provides for a sense of knowledge. Music can be a tool for many things: relaxation, stimulation and communication. But at the same time it can also be a tool for resistance: against parents, against police against power. Within the reign of imported culture, cross cultivation and the creation of the so-called global village lies the need to expand horizons to engulf more than just what you see everyday. It is important to note that the role of music in today’s world is a key tool in the process of globalization.
