Migration is a significant topic in every history textbook, from US history to world history. It has played a key role in many influential events as well as affected the world we live in now. For example, in the late 1800s many different ethnic groups migrated to the United States. Thanks to that great migration, the United States displays many different cultures as well as cultures that blended together to form the melting pot we know today. When most people think about migration, they automatically think of the Middle East region and the religious turmoil they are suffering from. However, migration to the Middle East is also causing economic disturbance. In 1971 the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government introduced a temporary guest worker program called the Kafala Sponsorship System, which allows nationals and companies to hire migrant workers. These migrant workers come mainly from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan due to the UAE’s economic attractiveness, relative political stability, and modern infrastructure. This has caused two major economic problems in the UAE which are a labor crisis and increase government spending. Unlike the labor crisis occurring in Kazakhstan with a lack of workers, in the UAE the situation is much similar to the labor crisis in the United States with Mexicans. Migrant workers make up over 90 percent of the UAE’s private workforce. Since there are so many migrants in the United Arabs Emirate, they are very accessible to companies and for that reason it is common for them to be treated poorly. This has led to it being hard for people native to the UAE to get a job. Companies are more likely to hire the worker who would work for less and in poorer conditions. During 1910-1970 the great migration was taking place, which was the movement of southern African American’s to the north/northern cities. The great migration was an event that seemed as if it was unstoppable and that it was going to happen. In the South African American’s faced racial discrimination, sharecropping, bad working conditions, low wages, racial segregation and political detriments. This is all supported by documents 1-4. The great migration was an event which helped improve the conditions for African Americans in America.
Immigration is a large aspect of American history. In the book Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez, we are able to see the struggles of one Hispanic boy immigrating to the United States from Mexico. Many of the people in the community that Francisco lived in didn’t really accept Hispanic people. It was really depressing that he would make friends, go over to their house and their parents wouldn’t let him come over again, simply because he was Hispanic. In Diversity Matters the text states, “Unique stresses created by the process of immigration to another country and discrimination faced in the new country can create psychological distress for many immigrants” (Spradlin 126). During this time in America, there was still a lot of discrimination going on not only with Hispanics, but other minority races like African Americans. This really goes to show how far our country has come over the years. There is still a long way to go, but I think that if people are more educated and aware of the discrimination people face on a daily basis they will be more open-minded. The United States is becoming more open to diversity, but first we will look at the struggles of one Hispanic boy growing up here illegally in Breaking Through.
Immigration has existed around the world for centuries, decades, and included hundreds of cultures. Tired of poverty, a lack of opportunities, unequal treatment, political corruption, and lacking any choice, many decided to emigrate from their country of birth to seek new opportunities and a new and better life in another country, to settle a future for their families, to work hard and earn a place in life. As the nation of the opportunities, land of the dreams, and because of its foundation of a better, more equal world for all, the United States of America has been a point of hope for many of those people. A lot of nationals around the world have ended their research for a place to call home in the United States of America. By analyzing primary sources and the secondary sources to back up the information, one could find out about what Chinese, Italians, Swedish, and Vietnamese immigrants have experienced in the United States in different time periods from 1865 to 1990.
America the land of opportunities, millions of people have left their countries to look for a chance to start a new life, a new beginning. Over the last 400 years, immigrants from different parts of the world left their countries for different reasons, some for war in their homelands others for economic and social reasons. Mexican community was one of the first group of people that stablished a strong presence in the country; therefor had and still has big influence in the development of the United States economically and industrially. The progression of people into and within the United States has had an essential impact on the nation, both intentionally and unintentionally. Progressions such as The Great Migration and the Second Great Migration are examples of movements that impacted the United States greatly. During these movements, African Americans migrated to flee racism and prejudice in the South, as well as to inquire jobs in industrial cities. They were unable to escape racism, but they were able to infuse their culture into American society. During the twentieth century, economic and political problems led to movements such as The Great Migration and The Second Great Migration which impacted the United States significantly.
Immigration has enriched and highlighted many of the five themes we went over as a class. It has added many details to immigration that we never touched before such as the process and the history of immigration. Even though we have gone over a bit as a class, but it as just a little knowledge spread apart throughout all five themes. Only later on learning about immigration, everything became clear. Like how there were restrictions in immigration caused by the world war and still how the civil rights movement led to removal of restriction for immigrants. Immigration has always, and will always, be an essential part of America’s demographic and cultural diversity. Our country was founded on the immigration of Europeans to the New World. Without them our nation would not be as advanced as it is today. Over the past three centuries, America’s immigration policies have evolved, both positively and negatively. Although we are moving forward, several episodes in our country’s immigration policy have targeted and attacked certain ethnic or cultural groups.

In the US today there are 40 million immigrants and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there is around 11 million illegal aliens already living right here and are not authorized to live and work in the United States. It makes it hard to protect their right because they are in this country illegal. Immigrant are living in the US are in constant fear of being deported so they live in quiet hiding so that they go undetected by US officials. They are so fearful of deportation that they don’t report crimes against them or employers that take advantage of them or do not pay them for work.
