Introduction:
This report discusses my applied study period work experience where I worked at The Midland Hotel. I chose to work at The Midland because I wanted to gain experience at a hotel located in the United Kingdom because I wanted to have a global view of the hospitality industry. In this report, I intend to cover the following areas: an overview of the business, structure of the company, current market position, product information and a critical evaluation of my own experience.
Company overview:
The QHotels was founded in 2003 and since then it has experienced rapid growth and grown from 2 to 21 hotels in a span of just 8 years. The Midland hotel, Manchester is a division of the QHotels.
The Midland Hotel is a magnificent 4 star hotel situated majestically in the heart of Manchester’s city centre. The hotel has a history of over a hundred year and has entertained Presidents, prime ministers, Kings, Queens and Rock stars. A few renowned guests from their esteemed guest list are Sir Winston Churchill, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2, Duke and Duchess of York, Princess Anne, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, Jenifer Lopez and the Manchester United and Manchester City Football team. It is situated 200 Meters from Oxford Road Station, 800 Meters from the Piccadilly station and is situated right across the road from Manchester Central. The Hotel provides around the clock transportation for its leisure and business guests.

I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience at the Midland Hotel and believe that I can continue to dream of having a future in this industry. After working at the Midland, I can conclude by saying that the Midland understands the distinct individual customer needs and that’s why they offer personalized services to suit the guests needs and wants. I feel proud to have work amongst the hardworking and talented Midland employees.

Lindsay Alanson is a 15-year experienced professional that has moved up the hospitality ranks through her hard work and effective management style. One of the best programs developed by Lindsay in the past has been an initiative to increase motivation for the lower paid employees. Lindsay has now been recruited by Grand Chancellor Resort to take on the challenge of lowering the employees’ 20% retention rate as the quick turnover of employees is costing the resort an excess amount of money. Not only would the resort like to cut the cost of the hiring process but also maintain the reputation of best places to work as they were finalist in the best places to work awards in 2006.
47% of Marriott’s rooms are in North American Limited Service, 30% are classified as North American Full Service, and the remaining 23% of its rooms are in the international segment (Marriott, 2015). Recognizing that travelers have a range of budgetary and amenities needs, Marriott operates its properties under a variety of different brand names, 19 in total, each of which has its own “price and service points” (Marriott, 2015). Most of Marriott’s brands are at the high end of the market, which includes such widely recognized luxury brands as the Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Renaissance Hotels, Bulgari Hotels, Marriott Executive Apartments, Marriott Vacation Club, Edition Hotels, Autograph Collection Hotels, Gaylord Hotels, and Marriott Hotels (Marriott, 2015). These properties often command nightly rental rates that can run several hundred dollars a night and offer a wide range of amenities well suited for both business and pleasure travelers. These properties are classified as “Full-Service.” Marriott also offers a range of “Limited-Service” brands that do not contain as many amenities and tend to be much cheaper than the Full-Service line. Examples of these properties include Courtyard, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, and Fairfield Inn & Suites (Marriott, 2015). Even though these properties are considered Limited-Service, they do offer considerably nicer accommodations and more amenities than other types of budget motels and hotels. In contrast to many of the other hotel brands, Marriott International does not operate any midscale, economy, or budget
In 1965, their first hotel, The Oberoi Intercontinental, now known as The Oberoi, New Delhi, was built. In 1957, they started their own flight services business. In1968, the Company acquired five hotels which include, The Oberoi Grand in Kolkata, The Oberoi Cecil, Shimla and The Maidens Hotel in Delhi. They commenced operations at the Oberoi Towers in Mumbai in 1973 and consequently expanded their operations from the five star deluxe segment to the Trident branded hotels. These were targeted at business and leisure customers seeking high-quality service at more affordable prices. From 1986 to 2009, the group added nine hotels branded Trident. Then in 1974, the Company established a printing press in Delhi chiefly to ensure supply of high quality stationery.

The Rendezvous Grand Hotel is very famous in Auckland. New Zealand is a tourism country. So the future plan of this hotel is to attract more tourists in the hotel with different kinds of facilities. The hotel take cares of all tourists with their different types of facilities. The hotel has made a good management team for the future to give good service. This hotel has one more branch in Christchurch. Hotel management also focuses on that property to make it one of the best hotels in Christchurch. The hotel has the goal to give good and best service to customers. They are trying to make a safer environment in the hotel.
The Portman hotel is one of the luxury hotels in the hotel industry. The size of the hotel is relatively small; it has only 348 rooms and 21 floors. The objective of this hotel is to bring Asian hospitality to the US. This hotel is different from other hotel because it offers the services of personal valet and also it had “ no rules for the guests”.
IHG is one of the most well known and respected International Hotel Groups, it has a very powerful heritage that guests have come to know and love. The British Multinational Hotel Company is headquartered In Denham, UK and has over 4,600 hotels and nearly 674,000 room in nearly 100 countries around the world. IHG was built on innovation and are the pioneers of the hotel industry with their origins being traced all of the way back to 1777. The hotel has 9 conference rooms for these events. The hotel is also affiliated with American Airlines. The hotel has special deluxe suites which include: the Deluxe Junior Suite, Royal Junior Suite, Royal One Bedroom Suite and the Royal Luxury Suite.
The Hotel industry has become very important in the past years due to immense traveling and growth of international business. Hotel industry not only plays an important role in the life of people but as well as the economy of the country. Development and advancement in the Hotel industry have rapidly been taking place and especially since the rapid change in technology, it is very important for hotels to be promptly keeping up to date. When the hotel industry is spoken of, there are many famous hotels but one hotel company that has been outstanding in growth and other aspects of business, like in Leadership, Teamwork (Employee turnover), Motivation (Customer retention and satisfaction, Goals and objectives, (changing the way hotel business has worked), and Change within the company; structurally inside and physically outside, adding elements, like entertainment, gaming, and outdoor activities, is the Hilton Hotel Company.
-“Sense of Place” philosophy- each hotel has a local character and culture of the given location. Architecture and history in implemented in each individual hotel which is very different approach than chain-like competitors. This was a power tool that Rosewood had!

After reading The Goal, I would like to apply these concepts to the hospitality industry, Hotel. I got a chance to have an interview with a former room attendant in Howard Hotels, a five-star hotel in Taiwan. Although the room attendant’s duty is quite simple, I find the way to apply the ideas from the book to their work.
