Most people have heard of Michael Jackson in their lifetime, his songs have been played in countless of movies, “Thriller” is played every October, but people might not know how he reached his fame. They might also not know what started his downfall. It all started out great, but a few rumors can ruin anyone’s reputation; Michael Jackson was a great example of this. Michael Jackson was known as The King of Pop, and one of the greatest singers and performers of all time, but a few mistakes made him go down as one of the most controversial modern tragic heroes. Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29th, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. Jackson has been successful since he was 5 years old, when his father Joseph Jackson created a musical group in the 1960s that would soon be referred as The Jackson 5. Despite his youthful fame and fortune, Jackson stated that he didn’t have a childhood. He would get abused by his father and instead of playing outside, he would be in a studio recording or practicing for shows. He didn’t have any freedom to live life while he was still young. Most of his days were very long and tough (Lewis). One day, Motown records founder, Berry Gordy discovered the Jackson 5 and signed a label with them in 1969. Unfortunately, The Jackson 5 split up because Berry Gordy and Joseph Jackson were having arguments over the childrens’ careers. This separation started Jackson’s career when he released his first solo album, Got to Be There when he was only 13 back in 1971. His album Off the Wall helped all the Jacksons’ careers in 1979. Michael Jackson finally became ‘The King of Pop’ in 1982. He released his most popular album, Thriller, which is the best selling album of all time to this day. Jackson’s personal physician told police that Michael took the drugs to help him sleep and he had an addiction to the drugs. He even referred to the drugs as his “milk.” The physician tried to wean Jackson off the drugs near the time of his death (Michael Jackson Biography.com 2017). After his death, Jackson’s children were in the custody of their grandmother, Katherine Jackson (Michael Jackson Biography.com). Soon after, Michael Jackson’s ranch was sold for 100 million dollars, and would soon be lowered to 33 million dollars. Neverland’s name was also changed to Sycamore Valley Ranch (White 2017). Even though Michael Jackson was known as one of the greatest singers and performers of all time, his mistakes made him go down as one of the most controversial modern tragic heroes.
