Mexican American enrollment in schools has risen even after the discriminatory laws that have tried to be implemented, such as anti-bilingual education, anti-affirmative action, and anti-immigrant policy movement (Carlo, McGinley, Hayes, & Martinez, 2012). These laws have made it widely acceptable to have prejudice feelings towards those of Latino decent because it separates these individuals from the rest of the community. Politicians are continuously making public, damaging statements limiting the rights of Latino immigrants. In addition to the discriminatory setting in education, it also is determined to be a risk factor that contributes to poor academia in Mexican-origin adolescents within the United States. Latino youth are at a high risk of school failure and begin school with high aspirations (Perreira, Fuligni, & Potochnick, 2010). According to Duff (2012), this behavior can be explained by the equity theory because it states that the individual’s motivation is based on what is fair when they are compared to others. These Mexican-origin students are experiencing unequal exchanges that have resulted failing in school. They are not motivated because of the unfair treatment they receive by the educators and other students, which has resulted in dissatisfaction and reduced productivity. For instance, peers’ and teachers’ perceptions based on discrimination are more likely to be linked to GPA (Umaña-Taylor, Wong, Gonzales & Dumka, 2012). In contrast with those students whom had a higher level of perceived discrimination, those who reported a lower level of perceived discrimination did not have a decline in grades. They can successfully move past the remark without it affecting their wellbeing. With the help of parental, community, and social support, resiliency against discrimination can end. Programs can implement promotion in the wellbeing that addresses issues of prejudices and racism. Also, a safe environment is needed to discuss issues and create tools to deal with discrimination. In conclusion, the community needs to create a way to increase awareness and combat oppressive practices for accepting diversity. By providing awareness through education, Mexican-origin students can avoid discrimination that affects their education, mental health, relationships, and motivation to succeed.
