Metropolitan Community College (MCC) is a two-year system of higher education, serving 12 urban, rural and suburban school districts in the KC region. Founded in 1915 as The Kansas City Polytechnic Institute and has grown into the largest institution of higher education in the Kansas City area, serving more than 37,000 credit and non-credit students annually. With a robust mission of preparing students, serving communities and creating opportunities. MCC’s five diverse campuses offers more than 92 associate degrees, in 30 transfer programs, 84 specialties and 73 certificates.

The proposed project is part of MCC’s overall beautification goal. The goal of the proposed Tree Planting Project is to replace trees on four campuses that are damaged, or have been removed. Our proposed strategies, objectives, and activities are designed to meet the purpose of KCP&L Micro Grant “Energizing Our Environment”. The grant funds would be used to plant trees to the interior parts of our campuses. In additional to the visual improvements, we would like to plant trees to conserve energy and reduce water usage. Additional trees will also help reduce the amount of water going into the storm sewers and help prevent soil erosion.

Metropolitan Community College has five campuses across the Kansas City metropolitan area, four of those campuses are in the KCP&L’s service area. Those campuses are Business & Technology at I-435 and Front Streets, Kansas City; Longview in northeast Lee’s Summit; Maple Woods on Barry Road between I-435 and MO 69 Highway, and Penn Valley in midtown Kansas City. The proposed project will be implemented at all four campuses, and funds will be divided proportionately to each campus based on the campus’s total square feet.
