Metaphysically Speaking: Seeking Peace In the 17th century the metaphysical poems Peace and The Sun Rising, written by George Herbert and John Donne respectively, both revolve around an elaborate personification in order to detail a journey in which one seeks a physical manifestation of the idea of peace and the other without ever leaving his bedroom seeks to rid him and his lover of the pestering Sun to also find peace. The two's journeys for peace parallel one another. The authors manage through their similar implementation of allusion, apostrophe and the aforementioned personification to develop analogous poems with contrasting topics of religion and a very physical love. Personification within the poems creates a greater physical connection and gives a sense of actual presence. In Herbert's Peace he inquires "Sweet Peace" where it could possibly "dwell" as he "humbly" desires the answer. Every place he visits he asks if Peace is there or is already thoroughly convinced that he must be able to find it there but is met with unfortunate luck. Not until the end does he realize that peace was always with him as for an honest man in pursuit of it he shall not be denied. The honest man in him can be seen with the humbleness in which he seeks peace. He becomes one with peace in a way. The constant availableness connects flawlessly with the religious theme flowing throughout as the church at his time and in any time really would not deny a man of pure desire seeking to find God. Donne also utilizes personification albeit in a different way. The journey in his poem seeks to rid himself of an "old fool", the "unruly Sun" who for some reason shines "through curtains" to "call on" the lovers. To him his love is the most important thing in ... ... middle of paper ... ... depiction of the love between the two and the allusion to both the presently called India with spice and the western Indians with their mines help to show the vastness he thinks his room encompasses. If even the riches of two places spanning across the world are there with him there's no question the room holds much more. The allusion plays to his arrogance whilst telling the Sun that compared to him it is nothing. Metaphysical poetry all has connections regardless of the topic. The authors were classified into this because of the similarities in their writing styles even if certain devices were used in different ways. Both Herbert and Donne's implementation of devices create the same emotions and purposes just placed into different contexts. Their poems parallel each other in the a search for peace despite the fact that one concerns religion and the other love.
Donne's reversal of that introversion came in the form of an intellectual exploration of the nature of his relationships themselves. His verses often point out the selfishness inherent to new love, as in "The Good-Morrow." In this poem, Donne's focus is on the exploration of the new world, which he then twists around to imply that his entire world is formed between his mistress and himself. "[Love] makes one room an everywhere." (l. 10) His poetic conceit (conception) is an explication of the emotional conceit (vanity) underlying love. A clearer example of the universalization of love is seen in "The Sun Rising" with the lines "She is all states, and all princes I,/Nothing else is." Personification is presented by the author as the only explanation for the narrator’s consumption. “The Blue Estuaries” begins to stir the narrator’s own poems (line 24) until she bores down on the page once more, coming back into what is perceived by the reader as a much more clear state of mind. Then, the narrator claims to have “lost her doubts” for a moment (line 34). Donne's poetry is a confrontation or struggle to find a place in this world, or rather, a role to play in a society from which he often finds himself detached or withdrawn. This essay will discuss Donne's states of mind, his views on love, women, religion, his relationship with God; and finally how the use of poetic form plays a part in his exploration for an identity and salvation.
The metaphysical era in poetry started in the 17th century when a number of poets extended the content of their poems to a more elaborate one which investigated the principles of nature and thought. John Donne was part of this literary movement and he explored the themes of love, death, and religion to such an extent, that he instilled his own beliefs and theories into his poems. His earlier works, such as The Flea and The Sunne Rising, exhibit his sexist views of women as he wrote more about the physical pleasures of being in a relationship with women. However, John Donne displays maturity and adulthood in his later works, The Canonization and A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, in which his attitude transcends to a more grown up one. The content of his earlier works focused on pursuing women for his sexual desires, which contrasts heavily with his latter work. John Donne’s desire for physical pleasure subsides and he seeks to gain an emotional bond with women, as expressed in his later poetry.
Herbert seems to use personification liberally to bring his points across and flesh out his metaphors. A good example of this is in the sixth stanza, where Herbert makes the sun, stars, night, music, and light have independent thought and reason - the stars put us to bed, and music and light attend our head, much like a parental figure or caring friend. He makes them have human emotions and thought, something more poignant and clarifying to the average reader - characterization like this develops and gives more of a plot and flow to the poem, which helps the reader understand his meaning and follow his thought much

The Good Morrow, a poem written by John Donne, gives a vivid, detailed, narration of the form of love many of us drastically seek to unearth. The narrator of The Good Morrow demonstrates no sign of misogyny, and instead displays an appreciation for the virtue of his lover in such a way that the reader comprehends the depths of their romance. Moreover, by developing such narration, Donne exhibits a pure and hopeful love, one in which he inspires his readers to acquire. He encourages this exploration by writing only of the positive encounters with his mistress. Therefore, he does not display the true structural balance of a relationship like he does in his poem, Loves Growth, in which a relationship is balanced by the ups and downs of life, or as he mentions in Loves Growth, the seasons. Figurative language is used by William Wordsworth to show the exchange between man and nature. The poet uses various examples of personification throughout the poem. When the poet says:”I wandered lonely as a cloud” (line 1),”when all at once I saw a crowd” (line 3), and “fluttering and dancing in the breeze” (line 6) shows the exchange between the poet and nature since the poet compares himself to a cloud, and compares the daffodils to humans. Moreover, humans connect with God through nature, so the exchange between the speaker and nature led to the connection with God. I hope that you have, but if you haven't, John Donne's poem, "The Sun Rising", gives a revealing glimpse into the emotional roller coaster that is true love. In the poem, Donne uses what is called a "metaphysical conceit" to emphasize the strength of the devotion between him and his lover. A metaphysical conceit is a metaphor extended to extreme, almost absurd lengths, so it makes sense for it to be used to describe intense feelings such as the devotion of two lovers. This definitely applies here, for in the mind of the narrator, he and his lover are the entire world, and the mighty sun, a mere servant to their desires.
“The Sun Rising” by John Donne is an aubade all about two lovers getting woken up by the sun when all they want to do is lay in bed all day. The entire poem is the speaker, presumably Donne himself, is talking to the sun and telling him to go away. This poem is broken into three stanzas with a rhyme scheme of ABBACDCDEE. Each of those stanzas represents what Donne is telling the sun to do, which is, to go away, I am stronger than you, and that he and his lover are the center of the world. He uses diction all throughout the poem to emphasize that the sun is not welcome in waking him and is lover and throughout all three stanzas to make his three points and to give the overall points of the poem. There are many metaphors used all through the poem and one overall metaphor.
