Mental wellbeing involves issues like a person’s ability to develop their potential, to work in an efficient manner and creatively, the ability to make solid and positive relationships with people and to give to their community (Beddington, et al. 2008). Wellbeing in life also includes such emotions of satisfaction, optimism, self-esteem, the ability to have control of surroundings, knowing the purpose in life and the idea of belonging and support (The Scottish Government, 2012). Mental health problems are an illness clinically described that, affect one’s ability to perform cognitively and emotionally (The Scottish Government, 2012). Thus, a way to boost our mental wellbeing is by getting involved in some form of exercise. Having an appropriate level of self-esteem is described to be, a person’s feeling of worth and respect, without having the feelings of power to others (Musanti, 2012). It also involves a belief for personal growth and improvement for the future (Musanti, 2012). Majority of the studies show that there has been positive relationship between, physical activity and self-esteem (Buckworth et al., 2013). McAuley and others (1995) looked into the physique anxiety in a women sample, it involved a 20-week aerobic exercise plan, the outcome showed a decrease in physical anxiety (as cited in Buckworth et al., 2013). Opdenacker, Delecluse, & Boen (2009) found that after a one year follow up, participants in the lifestyle group their increased body attractiveness score stayed, including with them having a improved score on their overall global self-esteem as well (as cited in Buckworth et al., 2013). Thus, it is shown that physical activity has more of a remaining effect, on a person’s idea of themselves and their self-es... ... middle of paper ... ... POMS had a negative correlation of r= - -0.999997844, so as weeks went by the mood disturbance decreased for the participant. The WEWBS had a positive correlation of r= + 0.99999952, there was a relationship between enduring the running programme and the mental health being of a person increasing. Overall the data supports all three aims previously mentioned, that after the 6 weeks exercise programme there showed to be an elevation in mood. The interesting finding was that is shown to be a rise in self –esteem, however in most cases of this study examining exercise and self-esteem, prior research show there to be no significant difference between the two. However must be cautious to generalize these results, as the sample size was relatively small. The positive results of this self-evaluation are promising and offer support for further research in this area.
Self-esteem focuses on personal body outlook as a whole. Body esteem is how one feels about his/her own body. Body satisfaction is an evaluation of how one thinks about his/her own body. In A Meta-Analyses of the Effects of Media Images on Men’s Body-Image Concerns, the conclusion from the study conducted was that “pressure from the mass media was significantly related to men feeling worse about their own bodies.” When someone’s esteem is lowered, depression can occur. This is an extremely dangerous negative effect from the media because this can lead to self-harm, or worse, suicide. From the study, it can be concluded that extremely muscular and “ideal” male body image types that the media portrays negatively affect how men think, feel, and see themselves on a daily basis (Barlett, et
Physical activity may have a lot of physical benefits, but along with those physical benefits are many mental benefits. Many medical professionals recommend
In the book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and The Brain by Dr. John J. Ratey, MD (2008), Ratey discuses how exercise can help treat many mood disorders and how it can help strengthen our brains. This book is divided into ten chapters all with five to ten subsections in them. The chapters include: Welcome to the revolution: A Case Study on Exercise and the brain, Learning, Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Attention Deficit, Addiction, Hormonal Changers, Aging, and the Regimen.
Exercise is the key to a happy and healthy life. Exercise helps maintain or obtain a healthy body weight. It’s also a great way to bond with fellow gym attendees. For all you know, your soul mate could be running on the treadmill next to you. Studies show people who exercise are happier overall. Exercise is important in day-to-day life.
The main concepts of mental wellbeing are about how an individual may think and feel on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis. How they react and cope with these thoughts and feelings, can hugely impact on their mental state of wellbeing. Different factors can contribute to a person’s mental wellbeing such as their personal relationships with others, social connections, the environment around them and their physical health. An individual must be able to identify and be confident enough to adapt to changes occurring in their life to maintain a good state of mental wellbeing. (Mind, 2016).

Blumenthal et al. (2007) and Diaz and Motta (2008) conducted empirical studies to prove their hypotheses about the relationship of exercise and mental health. Blumenthal et al. looked at a sample size of 202 adults over the age of 40 and randomly assigned them to one of four groups: (a) group exercise setting, (b) home based exercise group, (c) sertraline group, or (d) placebo group. The participants who were assigned to the exercise groups participated in a 16 week moderate exercise program. The other two groups either received sertraline or a placebo pill. All participants were assessed before, during, and after using the Becks Depression Inventory II [BDI] (Beck, Sheer, & Brown, 1996) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HAM-D] (Williams, 19...
Good physical and mental health can improve your quality of life in your older years. In addition to promoting your independence and keeping your body strong and energized, the American Council on Exercise states that physical activity also prevents and improves age-related conditions, such as osteoporosis and arthritis, and lowers your risk of injuries, and health conditions, such as stroke and heart disease. Paired with good mental health, this combination can add years to life. (See References 1)
Body image dissatisfaction is increasingly identified as an essential target for public health action ( Paxton , 2002, P. 2) Body image refers to a person’s unique perception of his or her body. It is how we perceive our selves, how we think we appear to others and how we feel about our looks from “our own internal view”. ( Nio, 2003, P3). This internal view is associated with the person’s feelings thoughts and evaluations. It can either be positive or negative. Negative body image could be associated with low self esteem. This could include low willingness to be involved in activities due to poor body image. Self-esteem is an important psychological need of human beings. It is very essential for a person to have a positive body image in order to face and overcome challenges in life. It helps to boost motivation and mental attitude.
Self-concept is one's view of one's characteristics. There is a strong link between positive self-esteem and physical, especially, mental health. Exercise improves our mind-set or mood and puts our mind in a more positive state. In the long term, exercise influences one to like one’s physical self – the capacities and physique. Last, but not least, in both short and long term, exercise furnishes one with a feeling of achievement that boosts one's confidence and esteem. Health is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ and health promotion is understood as ‘actions that support people to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles and which create supportive living situations or environments for health’. In these definitions it is clearly standard that mental health promotion is an essential component of health promotion. Not only are there complex interconnections between physical and mental health, they share many
Mental Health has a big role in one’s overall health. Mental health not only affects the mind but also the body. The mind and the body work as one. When many stresses in life impact a person, they can either choose to deal with it positively or negatively. Dealing with stress negatively would to choose to depend on drugs and alcohol to make the stress go away. However using drugs and alcohol only create an illusion of relief. It does not improve mental health but instead cumulate negativity in the mind. Dealing with stress positively would be to incorporate physical activity. Physical activity is a great way to improve the body physically and mentally. Physical activity has many benefits to all age groups. For adolescents and children, it can improve emotionally distress, body image and increase self-esteem (G. Kalra, 2012). Self-identification is one of the major obstacles for adolescents (S. McLeod, 2008). Adolescents are very much influenced by their peer and society. Yoga can help improve this because it improves spirituality; being one with yourself, which helps them prioritize their life and see the importance of themselves (G. Kalra,
Beginning with exercise affecting people emotionally, exercise can improve people’s moods. Anytime anyone is in a bad mood, exercising can put them in a good one. Mercola tells how people gain happiness from exercising: “According to a 2012 study published in the journal Neuroscience, the “secret” to increased productivity and happiness on any given day is a long-term investment in regular
Improving your mood and boosting your energy also comes from exercising. The physical activity activates different chemicals in your brain that makes you happier and more relaxed. One of the factors that enhance an individual’s ability to deal with stress is aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is composed of activities such as walking, running, biking, swimming, dancing, etc. This form of exercise is helpful for the body and health. Besides the help of reducing stress in a person this activities also include better sleep, relief of depression, or sickness. Exercising regularly can improve a person’s health which will then reduce the stress sickness may give. Another way exercise is capable of reducing stress is because exercise increases the body’s “feel good” chemicals, which are endorphins (Scott, 2012). These chemicals improve a person’s mood. Besides endorphins, the fact that a person is exercising alone increases an individual’s mood for the better, leaving stress aside. In general, a person that exercises more frequently has a ten...
