A Critical Analysis Of Melanie Martinez's 'Dollhouse'

When it comes to poetry, there is not one line that is written without true emotion being expressed. More times than not the writer is speaking about an event, or a real life situation that has happened to them within a time frame of their life. Poetry is utilized as an outlet, to let their audience see into in the inner circles of their souls. Based upon the words that are selected to represent the piece, a psychological picture can be created inside the reader’s mind. Creating mental imagery and clarity for the reader. Many authors have experienced, or suffered, from some sort of traumatic event in their life time. Therefore, they utilize words on a paper as a way to heal their hardened hearts. These words are graphic and allow individuals to start envisioning their own perception of the events that might have occurred. These words bounce around one’s mind, allowing for a mental photograph to be created out of the clever verbiage that was chosen to reflect the writing. This mental clarification is seen very creatively in the poem “Dollhouse”, written by Melanie Martinez. To set the tone, when examining the word dollhouse an individual would think of a young girl, in a pink dress, playing pretend with her dolls in the corner of her room. Now when that word dollhouse is coupled with phrases such as, “I see things that nobody else sees”, or “go back to being plastic”, this creates a completely different vision of what dollhouse is

“You don’t hear me when I say”. “Mom please wake up”. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention a whopping 3.4 million referrals were obtained from U.S state and local child protective services in 2012. These referrals were for child abuse and neglect, many of the victims were under the age of three years old at the time of the reporting. To put this into a visual perspective, the number of reported child abuse cases that were essentially reported is enough to fill up ten modern football stadiums. It is also estimated that one out of every ten of those cases will actually be proven, and justice sought for the victim. It was stated by the National Criminal Justice Reference Service that, “child victims are extremely vulnerable, and often completely helpless, and that they are often hurt by their own
