Mental Health and Illness Introduction Mental Health is an issue that millions of individuals are facing here in the United States. Illnesses such as anxiety and panic attacks, borderline personality disorder, drug and alcohol addiction, and depression affect the lives of so many. Research Questions What is mental health? The risk of suicide rises sharply as people grow older (Suicide). Globally, there is an estimated 25 suicide attempts for each completed suicide (Suicide). These statistics are too staggering and to drastic to ignore. Logic, an American rapper, released his hit single “1-800-273-8255” in April of 2017 (Kennedy). The song's name is the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Following Logic’s performance of the song at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, the NSPL reported experiencing a 50 percent surge in the number of calls to their hotline (Kennedy). He broke the silence that so many were afraid to do themselves, and saved the lives of million as a result. Psychotherapy explores the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals and seeks to improve an their overall well-being (American Psychological Association). Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective of these found under the umbrella of psychotherapy (Mental Health Treatments). According to the American Psychological Association, about 75 percent of people who enter cognitive behavioral therapy experience some benefits from treatment. This form of therapy seeks to identify and help change potentially self-destructive or unhealthy behaviors (Gotter). Although medication does not outright cure mental illness, psychotherapy paired with medication is the most effective way to pave the way to recovery (Mental Health

Mental health can be described as our positive interactions with the context and events in our life, and having the ability to cope with life’s stressors. Mental health problems can begin at anytime during your life (CAMH, 2010). In fact anything can make it difficult for an individual’s ability to interact effectively, and may lead into a mental health problem (Association, 2001).
A social need that is experienced worldwide is mentally illness. Mental illness in my opinion is one of the most neglected, as well as, the most vulnerable population and today time. The reasons being, a lot of people, as well as, professional people do not understand the disease. So therefore, if they do not understand the mental illness disease, how can they be an assist to the person/persons who suffer with the disease? Since the 1800s, treatment methods for mental illness have developed significantly worldwide. From electrotherapy to modern practices like psychotherapy, treatment for mental disorders has greatly progressed as scientists and psychologists learn more information on the causes of mental illness and the best therapy for each particular disease. The past 200 years mark the most defined era since the beginning of humans for the progression of treatment for mental illness. Not only has treatment improved for the mentally ill, but also the perception of mental illness has greatly changed and will continue to do so as more is learned about the human mind.

Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. While suicide is an impetuous decision, there are many help lines available that may aide in the prevention of it. Although it might be hard, and there are many complicating factors and warning signs that can lead to suicide, with extensive effort put in, suicide can sometimes be prevented, but not all suicide can be. There are always extenuating circumstances that make it impossible to prevent someone from taking their own life.
