Melanoma is a tumor of melanin-forming cells (Mayo Clinic). It is the most serious type of skin cancer. Melanoma is diagnosed less frequently than other types of skin cancer, but it has the ability to spread very quickly (About.com). It looks like dark spots on the skin. Melanoma develops in the melanocyte cells that produce the pigment that gives your skin its color called melanin. People under 40, most commonly women, are more likely to develop melanoma (Mayo Clinic).
The exact cause of melanoma still isn’t clear. Exposure to ultraviolet rays can be harmful to the skin and cause melanoma. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight can burn your skin, and risk your chance of getting melanoma. Tanning bed lights can also cause radiation (Mayo Clinic).
The first common symptoms are a change in an existing mole and the development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth on your skin. . Most people have between 10 and 45 moles. These moles develop by the time you reach the age of 40. Some moles can disappear with your age or change how they look. Melanoma doesn’t always begin in the mole. It sometimes occurs on skin that may appear perfectly normal (Mayo Clinic). To remember the characteristics of unusual moles, remember the letters A-B-C-D-E. A is for asymmetrical shape. Look for moles with an unusual shape. Sometimes the mole will have two completely different halves. B is for irregular border. These moles have irregular, notched, or scalloped borders. C is for change in color. Some growth will have many different colors. They could also have an uneven distribution of color. D means diameter. Look for growths in a mole larger than ¼ inch.
