Meeting people diverse backgrounds can be challenging at times. We all have our perceived view of the world, and other cultures are no exception to this rule. Due to internet, mass communication, faster air travel, and a litany of other means of transport the world has become a smaller place. We are now in contact with many different races within their original home lands as opposed to meeting them in America. What is fascinating is while it appears the world has shrunk due to the aforementioned reasons, as a society of people we have not been able to communicate effectively nor fully understand other cultures. This I would like to say is not relegated to visiting other countries, however even here in America this inability to comprehend …show more content…
The author tackles several issues that he believe presents a barrier into assimilation. He presents some advice and methods for the servant leader to use in an effort to communicate better within a cross-cultural setting. Amongst this portion are several observations that Elmer believes will help a missionary or believer when speaking cross-culturally. He stated that being open is key when working with other cultures, accepting their norms and social mores will also speed up the process because it will evoke trust and respect. Next one should make every effort to learn about the culture, seek information, this will allow for a better biblical approach when presenting the gospel. Another way to gain entry would be to understand where those individuals are coming from, and finally presenting yourself as someone who is willing to serve within the social structure. The final part of the book takes a look at biblical leadership. Joseph is a biblical character that the author chose to feature within this section. The goal within this section is to learn when to take a back seat, when to evoke God within the ministry as it relates to leadership, and finally how to handle complications that can arise when one’s mind and feelings do not coincide with each
Most cultures I find relate in many ways. They all display characteristics of servant leadership. I discovered that the Indian culture holds one to moral and ethics within the culture and religion. In a mirror image of Christians, Indians believe that your destiny is base off the seeds one sows while here on earth. The Indian culture does not recognize their beliefs and morals as servant leadership and have a different way of presenting the concept. One of the ways that one will find that servant leadership is presented different is in their religious practice of Hindu. Over all the Indian culture diverse context and religion
Servant leadership consists of leaders helping their followers become leaders themselves. The use personal skills such as empathy, compassion and listening to help their followers succeed. It is not necessarily the most popular form of leadership but, it has been proven successful b those leaders who implement it in their work practices. Servant leaders typically have a strong bond with their team. They are the base and the foundation of their teams.
Many leadership styles exist. The determining factor if a leadership style is effective or not is often how it is carried out and if it is appeasing to those, the leader is attempting to lead. One of the leadership styles that has become popular is Servant leadership. Although Greenleaf developed servant leadership more than thirty-five years ago and he identified ten characteristics that pertain to servant leadership. (book p. 56) Servant leadership has been successful in various industries and its popularity continues to increase.
Steward or Servant-leadership characterizes a model of leadership in which the leader undertakes a supportive, service orientated role among stakeholders and employees. The leader assists by building the skills of employees, minimizing obstacles, and enabling creative problem solving and innovation. “The characteristics associated with servant leadership include incorporating active listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and community building” (Spears, 2002). Servant leaders build up their employees and surround themselves with good people and then motivate them to achieve greatness and this starts at the top within BMW
Successful leaders must be skilled in asking their team members questions that will provide useful answers. As stated “If people aren’t giving you helpful answers to your questions, maybe your asking the wrong questions” (Dennis, 2011, para. 1). Questions are essential in keeping a project on track, and are used to help identify any issues or constraints that could affect the outcome of the project. If a leader fails to ask questions they will not know if the project faces any challenges. If the project is facing a challenge, the number one question to ask is “Can we fix it” (Pink, 2010, para. 4). Leadership and management will be unable to help resolve issues if they don’t that they exist. The only way to know if their project is facing any challenges is simply by asking the right questions.
In addition, I would like to share some quote from one of MSU faculty that I heard on my orientation 3 years ago. “ Do you think how many time you will have an opportunity to be in a society that you can meet a person from around the world”. Indeed, what he said is true. My friends are Chinese, Japanese, American, African American, Taiwanese, and even African. It was an amazing right; I can make my friend around the world in one place. I don’t think many people have a chance like me to interact with people from around the world by not visiting their countries. In addition, interact with people that have a different background than you can lead you to a new perspective, these people make you look the world from a different
The term ‘leadership’ has no definition, for it is defined different ways in the minds of people. A leader will ingrain a sense of positivity and necessity towards the set goal using the power of written and spoken word. The qualities of a leader differentiate between between each society.

Effective leadership, commonly regarded as both a learned skill and innate ability, is an essential characteristic of successful organizations (Northouse, 2016). Great leaders are said to define purpose, create a vision for the future, set high ethical standards, and guide their organizations through many circumstances and into new directions (Morrill, 2007; Parris & Peachey, 2012). Leadership is also described as complex – it can mean different things to different people. Given there is no standard approach to leadership, scholars focus on the process of leadership as opposed to the definition (Northouse, 2016). As a process, leadership is not simply possessing
With God’s help the Biblical leaders Ezra and Nehemiah were able to fulfill their roles as leaders in the Jewish community. These men of God were chosen to be leaders to pray for the Israelites, relay Gods commands and encourage the people. As God’s leaders Ezra and Nehemiah carried out their respective duties even if fierce opposition awaited them.
An authentic leader is someone who over the years has developed a unique vision; a person who is respected, not only because they are expert in their field, but is also respected because of their humility. An authentic leader is someone who is open to hear ideas other than their own ideas; someone who fosters creativity in a team. An authentic leader is someone who also sets clear expectations for the vision they have and along the way challenges their employees to achieve more than they even though was possible, but will those accountable who are not on board with the vision and expectations set forth. Lastly, an authentic leader is someone who will face and have to make difficult decisions without compromising core values.
Being a good leader means being able to guide people or organizations such as businesses. Being a leader means you have leadership in you, it means you have a set of skills that not everyone can possess and you can apply them to the situation that you are in. Not everyone can be a leader because not everyone can step up and take over a situation or maybe they don’t care enough to do something about it. A leader has to possess the following and more qualities, honesty, communication skills, confidence, commitment, intuition, a positive attitude, and creativity.
The emphasis of servanthood covers the Bible, and is a building block of the Christian faith. Many words are used to describe the term servanthood, however, not all are accurate, or Biblical, but there are two words that are key to the definition and execution of servanthood. Humility is a necessary trait of servanthood; without it, servanthood becomes another avenue for the ego to encompass, in a search for self-affirmation. The deepest root of humility is buried in the recognition and of our infinite dependence on God. While greatness is seldom mentioned along with servanthood, they go hand in hand. Because, greatness is truly measured in scale with God Himself, it immediately becomes small and miniscule by comparison. This should, in turn, produce the purest humility. With this in mind, I have come to define and recognize servanthood as the communion of the true definitions of humility and greatness, and their relationship to God.
When stepping into a leadership role, one must have values, morals, and standards. These characteristics are not taught but developed over time. Servant Leaders must be happy with one self in order to leader others or having the expectations of having followers to develop them in to future leaders or believe in. One must have the characteristics of courage, humility, competency, mentoring, decision making, citizenship, and reflection. Being an educator or role model requires having the skills of a servant leadership is important.
What makes a good leader? What makes a good leader is having the experience, knowledge, and skills to undertake the tasks and responsibilities.A leader would work toward their goals and succeed. There are many different characteristics to become a leader “Leadership is the art of leading others to deliberately create a result that wouldn’t have happened otherwise” (Search Inside Yourself). This is a great definition of being a leader and how they should rule. Some leaders can either have all or only some qualities to become a good leader.
