End Medical Tourism Medical tourism in its’ simplest terms refers to when a patient opts to go out the country to receive medical treatment. Often people choose this route rather than staying local due to the cheaper costs that foreign countries offer for their healthcare. Underdeveloped continents such as Asia, South America, and even Africa offer such, but who is to say that these countries are developed enough to be conducting the procedures that they do. When choosing this route of medical care, there are many major concerns that the patient must be aware of when it comes down to deciding if this route is what is best for them. Reasons a patient may travel all this way for a procedure may vary. Many people within the United States may travel out of the country because they can seek treatment at a quarter or sometimes even a tenth of the costs at home (Why Should You Be A Medical Tourist?). People from Canada may choose to take this route of medical care because it is quicker and a waiting list no longer exists once you leave this country in hope of seeking treatment. However, because the patient is no longer in their native country, there are many risks that must be taken. For example, if something wrong were to happen while the patient was undergoing a treatment, then it would be harder to bring in legal actions. Outbound medical tourism is only rewarding when the treatment goes as planned, but there are many obstacles that the patient must go through for an unpromising procedure. “Nearly forty-six million Americans (15.7% of the population lacked health insurance in 2004, and more are uninsured today…estimate of 18,000 Americans die every year because they are uninsured and thereby lack healthcare” (Washington) Because healthcare is so costly many Americans cannot afford it therefor if any medical issues would come across them anytime in their lives, then an option for them would be to take the route of medical tourism. However, if healthcare were to be more affordable, than many people can seek the medical attention that they may need within the United States giving them more assurance of a successful operation. Although lowering the costs of healthcare is a great idea and is something that is already a major concern amongst the American people; it is already in the eye of our political system.
