There are many different careers in the world. One of the largest career fields is in medicine. The medical field consists of many different jobs, some of which are physical therapists, surgeons, pediatricians, nurses, and anesthesiologists. All of these jobs help people when they are sick, injured, or recovering. Being a surgeon is one of the tougher jobs in medicine. Becoming a surgeon is a long journey filled with many hours of hard work, but if one finds saving people’s lives rewarding, then it is the perfect occupation.
Neurosurgeons, Cardiovascular Surgeons, and General Surgeons are just a few of the different types of surgeons practicing in the medical field. “Neurosurgery is the surgical specialty that deals with the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord” (Heisler). Neurosurgeons help by performing some of the most complicated and stressful surgeries. “Cardiovascular surgery is surgery in the area of the heart and chest or both” (Heisler). Cardiovascular surgeons perform operations such as heart transplants, replacing arteries, valve replacement and bypass surgery to name a few. The average cardiovascular surgeon performs around 150 CABGs, which is the term for bypass surgery, a year (Eisenhower; Cohn). “General surgery is the surgical specialty that focuses mainly on the abdominal organs” (Heisler). Even though they are called General Surgeons these men and women are very skilled. They usually work on appendicitis, hernias, gallbladder surgeries, stomach and intestinal issues (Heisler).
All of these types of surgeons work in sterile operating rooms that are well equipped, lighted, and ventilated (“Physicians and Surgeons”). Most surgeons work in hospitals. They can work at one hospital or they may ...

...rewarding, then being a surgeon can be the perfect occupation. With the many different types of surgeons there are many options for a person to choose. In addition to the good salary that can be earned, a surgeon has the option to work a variety of hours and in a variety of places. Although the journey to becoming a surgeon is filled with many different steps of education and long hours of hard work, being surgeon is a rewarding occupation for those who put forth the work it takes on the road to becoming a surgeon.
