The media portrayal in the film, Amour, is an attempt at specifically and accurately depicting the evolution of the spousal relationship in older age and the diminishing health status of one partner. End-of-life issues are vastly complicated, yet reside as one of those subjects that remains somewhat taboo or unspeakable. Not many people want to talk about death, but for the most positive outcomes, communication is an absolute requirement. This film is the beginning of that conversation. If asked, most people will state that they hope for a quick and painless death. The reality is that, like life, death is a process and one needs to plan and prepare for its inevitability. Researchers, Garre-Olmo et al. (2009), have found a link between patient socio-demographic characteristics, physical and cognitive disabilities, and suspected elder abuse. Difficulty in identifying abuse is found in serious cultural and privacy barriers that prevent researchers from a comprehensive understanding of the scope and severity of elder abuse (Garre-Olmo et al., 2009). In the case of Georges and Anne, isolation played a tremendous part in the failure of family and neighbors to recognize Georges as being overwhelmed with caregiver stress and burden. Georges and Anne’s daughter also shows a truthful depiction of the suffering and stress a child may experience from an outlying perspective. The established authority and hierarchy of the parental-child relationship clearly contributes to the daughter’s inability to intervene respectfully and effectively. The building frustration Georges felt with the progression of Anne’s disability continues to swell and eventually erupts into violence. The conclusion of the film shows Anne surviving in the direst of circumstances. She appears to be in extreme pain and suffering. Georges knew from earlier conversations with his wife that she did not wish to live out her life in that particular manner.
