News media is a powerful object that shapes the culture of which we live in. Sociology examines in depth, the subject of news media, and how they are biased in structure. Large media outlets have the power to report any event happening in the world right now. This does not mean that they will report on every important issue in the world right now. Media outlets are often unreliable in the content they report, and do not report every important topic. News media corporations are very corrupt in the way they report, often not showing the full news story or an altered version of the story to get more views. Female athletes did not get much coverage in the televised news sports coverage. The coverage between Network News and SportsCenter of airtime devoted to women’s sports totals 1.6%. Sports media does not cover many women’s sports, and if they are covered, it is basketball, the most speculated womaen’s sport. When comparing the WNBA to the NBA, the WNBA has had 8 stories air between 2 months, and the NBA had 81 stories air in the same two months. This shows that the most popular women’s sport does not come close to equaling the one of the two most popular men’s sports. Statistics show how much time the scrolling text bars at screen bottoms focus on women’s sports. This ranges from 2.7% to 4.6% of the total ticker time in a 2009 statistic. Men’s sports are always shown in the lead for these scrolling text bars with coverage 94.6% to 96.4% of the time. Sec is not the only thing that determines if a sport is going to be aired on news networks. On ESPN’s Sports Center a statistic shows that 5.6% of reported sports cover men’s golf. There are also nineteen other men’s sports that are covered less than 5.6% of the time. The content of the stories covered in women’s sports are often sexist. They can be portrayed as objects of ridicule or “gag-stories” are covered. These sexualized gag-stories include a “Make-The-Putt Bra” that was aired on KNBC. MMA fighting is a highly speculated sport in the united states that is often depicted as a very violent sport by media. The media uses a perception of one or two athletes to determine the interest in the sport. By providing the population with news stories regarding one or two of the best fighters in the league, that particular sport gains a lot more views and more views of the news as well. The audience wants to hear about all the violence of the sport, not the techniques used, how hard the athletes trained or their personal lives. The UFC and MMA are sports in which are only watched by many to see the violent nature and because it is easy to watch as many do not understand the concept of the fighting. The viewers like to see who wins and the battle scars of the losing opponent. The media is not interested in the point system or the strategic fights, but they are interested in the bloody nature of men fighting. Media bias is shown in this case because the media does not show the sport accurately, rather just the violence and subjectivity that can attract more viewers
