To better understand how new media such as Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube post videos and pictures or acts of crime that affect our society and the criminal justice system, we must first look at the history of media and their relationship with the criminal justice system. Media is broken up in four parts which are: print, sound, visual, and new media. Most people don’t think about the fact that there was a part of media that was there before print media. Just by this one act crime stories became popular in the media. At first the papers portrayed crime as a social class issue that was causing crime to occur. Then during that time there became detectives and crime thrillers that were published (Surette, 2015). Even through; media has evolved throughout the years the portraits of crime and justice are the same as today. Such as there is a criminal, hero, or victim. Television started to create crime shows (Surette, 2015). People most of the time believe what they hear or see, so what the media is portraying can affect someone reality. Media has four types of content that can be a influence in the criminal justice system and they are: advertising, news, entertainment, and infotainment Surette, 2015). These content of media has affected our society and criminal justice system. Advertising- Shows product, campaigns, and that it is low on violence (Surette, 2015). Entertainment- Is where the media is not showing any reality or real events (Surette, 2015). It is as if one can leave reality for a while, but there are some that will not come back from it. Entertainment makes the audiences that are watching to be more interesting (Logues, 2015). News- Is what is going on in the world that is true and current.
