Euripides’ play, Medea, is an ambiguous narrative relating to self-serving feminism. Depending on one’s viewpoint, the title character can either be one of the most unconventional delegates of women’s rights or an oblivious saboteur willing to undermine the cause. With all factors from the play taken into account, signs point toward the former. Medea was a pioneer of feminism, acting as a driving force behind breaking the stereotypes assigned to women. Despite being a foreigner and having a questionable moral compass, Medea succeeds in being a benefactress even if it wasn’t the goal she had in mind.

The act of murder is abhorrent in itself, although even more so when it’s your own children. However these wouldn’t have been the first murders Medea’s taken part in having previously killed both Glauce and Creon. Medea demonstrated through these murders that she greatly lacks a sense of morality. The Nurse often commented on Medea’s practicality and logic throughout the Greek tragedy in quotes such as “[Medea] hates her sons […] I dread to think of what is hatching in her mind. (1)” and “Why make the sons share in their father 's guilt? (20-21)”. The Nurse had the sensibility that Medea lacked. Even if Medea’s actions can be somewhat rationalized or explained, murdering her kids is unjustifiable. Through these murders, Medea demonstrated that each sex is equally capable of being a horrible person, therefore, acting as a form of equality. The Greek playwright, Euripides, is considered one of the three great tragedians of classical Athens. His individuality is attributed to the way he “pushes to the limits of what an audience can stand” . His masterpiece Medea , a fascinating classic centered on the Greek goddess Medea, is a prime example of this. During his time, Euripides was unpopular since he defied the commons themes of tragedies during the 430s B.C.E.; he instead introduced a nihilistic and disturbing tragedy focused on women, slaves and persons from the lower class. His mastery shines through as he guides the audience to sympathize with Medea even when she commits filicide, a seemingly horrendous act. He utilizes the Chorus, the Nurse, and the Children-which are all minor characters-to induce compassion for Medea, establish the development of her emotional state, and ascertain the importance of her pride. Although these characters guide the audience towards similar concepts, they represent a contradiction when it comes to the slaughter of the Children.
Later in the story, our sympathy transfers from Medea to Jason. Her revenge turns immoral, leaving readers with a sense of uneasiness. It is not so much the fact that she kills Creon and his daughter, but the fact that she slays her children in cold-blood.
Today, we might not see Euripides's Medea as offending or off, but at the time of the art festival that it was originally written for, many of the ideas it brought up challenged the ideas and beliefs that greeks at the time had, and these conflicts are what caused it to place last in this contest, even thought today we study it extensively. Medea is a very complex and ingenious play, slyly developing a character much more intricate than any Greeks had seen before. Medea, the sorceress that all Greeks knew and loved, was spun completely, not only "ruining" their old story, but going against their ideas of heroism, and their gods. But it also challenged them to look at themselves and question their identity, not just as a person, but as an entire culture. He made them ponder their own identity, and in turn, forced them to contemplate if they were truly ready for the next revolution in literature.
The tragic play Medea is a struggle between reason and violence. Medea is deliberately portrayed as not a ‘normal woman’, but excessive in her passions. Medea is a torment to herself and to others; that is why Euripides shows her blazing her way through life leaving wreckage behind her. Euripides has presented Medea as a figure previously thought of exclusively as a male- hero. Her balance of character is a combination of the outstanding qualities of Achilles and Odysseus.
In Euripides' Medea, the main character of the same name is a controversial heroine. Medea takes whatever steps necessary to achieve what she believes is right and fair. She lived in a time when women were expected to sit in the shadows and take the hand that life dealt them without a blink of their eye. Medea took very radical steps to liberate herself and destroys the life of the man who ruined hers. She refused to accept the boundaries that a patriarchal society set upon her. Medea was a very wise and calculated woman who was brave enough to leave her homeland, along with everything she knew and loved, in order to follow her heart down the path of what she expected to be eternal happiness.
Women’s lives are represented by the roles they either choose or have imposed on them. This is evident in the play Medea by Euripides through the characters of Medea and the nurse. During the time period which Medea is set women have very limited social power and no political power at all, although a women’s maternal and domestic power was respected in the privacy of the home, “Our lives depend on how his lordship feels”. The limited power these women were given is different to modern society yet roles are still imposed on women to conform and be a dutiful wife.
In Medea, by Euripides, conflicts play a major role in the creation of the play. Some examples of these conflicts are with Medea and Jason, Medea and herself, and Medea and Creon. Medea is shown to be a strong, independent woman who does what she wants as well as doesn’t let anything stand in her way. She shares qualities of a traditional male at the time, and the qualities of a traditional female. Euripides makes this clear in the play by creating conflicts to prove women can be a powerful character and that the play in general challenges the idea of misogyny.
When Medea Jason discovers Jason’s plans to marry Creon’s daughter she was hurt deeply. But when Creon tells her that she was being exiled we see her hurt turn into vengeance. Because Medea was a manipulative person she was only needed one day to plan and execute her plan to destroy Jason.
