The McDonald 's restaurant chain of today began its humble beginnings as a renovated barbecue car-hop restaurant in San Bernardino in 1940. Two brothers, Maurice and Richard McDonald, were the owners. By 1947 the McDonald brothers changed their restaurant into a self-serve system with a simpler menu of food offered, including hamburgers. At the end of 1948, the restaurant’s name was changed to just McDonald’s. Their restaurant became so successful that they began to franchise it, initially in Phoenix, Arizona and also in Downey, California. By the mid 1950’s, it was not uncommon to see 150 customers in line at the hamburger restaurant, with an annual revenue of $350,000 being pulled in.

With a set time of 45 seconds or less service, this innovation helped McDonald 's increase their revenue by 46%.
