Business back in the early twentieth century had different points of view comparing to now a days. But it was in that time that some main researches have been made by several managers. The main concern will be with two very specific and important theorists that highly influenced the world, Max Webber (1864-1924) and Winslow Taylor (1856-1915). The discussion is about Taylor’s principles of ‘Scientific Management’ and ‘Bureaucracy’ in eyes of Max Webber.

Winslow Taylor spent most of his life trying to resolve the problem of efficiency. Majority of his work was concentrated on how to improve physical work productivity. He shared his ideas and researches to other as he published ‘Scientific Management’ in 1911.

In the times of Taylor the world was passing through a several major changes in technology. In consequence from the industrial revolution new machines and labour arose. The biggest similarity is that both of them try to achieve the greatest efficiency (biggest profit and greatest harmony). Adding to this, also these two theories include the division in work which forms an important role. As well as, they both disadvantage the employees and at the same time give him some benefits. Moreover the selection process in both theories is a main feature which has a big impact on the effectiveness of the organisation. They both as well lack in theoretical social science foundations. In contrast, Webber shows how to run a company while Taylor analyses work systems. In addition Taylor’s rules where to achieve greater efficiency but Webber rules were made to legitimise power. To conclude Scientific Management proved that it can change over time while Bureaucratic system did not
