The first start to learning math as a new language is learning all the key terms that are involved in that particular course. This information is essential for anyone who wishes to study, and comprehend with success in the field of mathematics. If I wish to study Algebra extensively, but yet have no clue what a variable is, I will have absolutely no idea any of the information. For this reason, as a math teacher I am very determined to thoroughly explain every foreign term being covered that chapter. An example of this can be found within my first piece of evidence. My first piece of evidence attached about, titled Definitions/ Word Wall, is a complied list of algebra 1 key terms and a picture, taken from my classroom, of trigonometry key terms. The student had no issue with comprehending the key terms, or writing mathematically, she just was not able to read the problem. This accommodation was very moderate, but made a worlds difference in the quality of work she was able to produce.
Every step listed above is crucial to properly understanding mathematics, no matter what the level math that is being performed. From grocery shopping to driving, indoor plumbing to putting a man on the moon, math is used everywhere and every day. If one does not know the language of math, then it is impossible for them to complete even the minute daily task. Therefore as a math teacher it is vital to take the time to teach math as a new language, and not just subject matter.
