Materialism has often led to excessive consumption and production than what is needed, which causes wastes in resources, as depicted with the luxurious lives of the characters in The Great Gatsby. For example, just in the U.S alone, “Yet, 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten. That is more than 20 pounds of food per person every month. Not only does this mean that Americans are throwing out the equivalent of $165 billion each year, but also 25 percent of all freshwater and huge amounts of unnecessary chemicals, energy, and land. Moreover, almost all of that uneaten food ends up rotting in landfills where it accounts for almost 25 percent of U.S. methane emissions,” (“Wasted: How America Is Losing Up to 40 Percent of Its Food from Farm to Fork to Landfill”). In other words, the more we consume, then the more must be produced to meet demands, which in turn, leads to the depletion of the earth’s finite resources and pollution. This does not only apply to food, it also applies to merchandise such as cars, houses, clothes, and other material items. Many people do not need those ten sports cars in the garage of their mansion. Furthermore, “The poll found that 63% of respondents are concerned about the amount of food wasted in the United States… the respondents were shown facts about the environmental, economic and social impacts of food waste, 60% said the impacts were more than they expected. Knowing the facts, a full 73% said we should all try to make it a high priority to limit food waste,” (Leibrock). Ultimately, many people realize how much products are being wasted, and their impact on the world. Also, a large percentage of people believe something should be done to prevent how much resources are wasted.

As for the corruption in capitalism, it can be prevented by focusing on the youth, the next generation of leaders, educators, etc. For instance, “Emphasis on education… Create a culture of integrity… Demand accountability. Translating these three key focus areas into concrete action can help free the world from corruption and lead to long-term sustainable development that benefits all sectors of society,” (Vlassis). Fundamentally, if we give the youth early on a proper, updated education, teach them about being accountable for all their actions, and having integrity, along with teaching ideas such as that of “no cutting corners,” it can create a new generation of well educated, respectable, and conscientious people who enter into the world of the market.
