According to the management scholars Richard Kreitchner and Carlene Cassidy, “the term motivation, refers to a physiological process that gives behavior purpose and direction” (328). In chapter 12 of the book entitled “Management,” authors Kreitchner and Cassidy discuss how managers can attempt to motivate their employees effectively. The authors insist that managers can work to keep employees loyal to organizations by “administering rewards fairly, building trust and teamwork, and creating a stimulating work environment” (328). There are many theories that analyze how to motivate workers, one of the most prominent being Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory. I aim to analyze this theory in order to make recommendations for work motivation at my current place of employment, The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), a non-profit membership association for family physicians.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory is over 70 years old but is still looked to as one of the most important theories psychological behavior, particularly the behavior of workers. The theorist predicts workers are motivated by 5 things: “psychological needs, safety needs, love needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs” (329). Maslow theorizes that people are not fully aware of these needs on a conscious level and there is a hierarchy of needs that must be met one level at a time (328). The theory also suggests that as each level of needs is fulfilled, new needs appear (329).
The first level of needs in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory is psychological needs. Kreitchner and Cassidy explain this is the lowest-level of needs includes the basic needs of survival like food, water, and sleep (329). ...

I believe Maslow’s theory still holds true today for many workers around the world I feel workers need to feel their basic needs are met by being paid a fair wage. They need to feel safe in their work environments in order to do their work effectively. Workers need to feel that their managers care about their well-being and personal lives. They want to be recognized for their hard work and given positive feedback. And they also want to be challenged to reach their full potential at their jobs. It is the job the management team at any organization to find out how to fulfill the needs of its’ workers, only then will workers be motivated to help organizations achieve their goals.
