James Monroe wasn’t born to live an ordinary life, but an extraordinary one. He was born April 28, 1758, in his parents house in a forest area of Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father Spence Monroe (1727-1774) worked as a planter and carpenter. James’s mother Elizabeth Jones (1730-1774) married his father in 1752 and they both had several children together. James grew up with his siblings by the same teachings of his mother. His parents died when he was a teenager. When he became of age, he attended the College of William and Mary and fought in the Continental Army. After he was wounded in New York serving in George Washington’s army he met Elizabeth Kortright. They got married on February 16, 1786, when he was twenty-seven and Elizabeth was seventeen. When he realized he could not become as wealthy as his father he broadened his horizons, moved and practiced law along with politics in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Jesses father a preacher and farmer he decided to go to California to look for gold and got ill not long after he arrived there. Frank was only 7 and Jesse 3 so it was Zerelda’s 2nd husband Louisa Samuel that was a father figure to the brothers.
	At the age of thirteen he boarded a ship to Whitehaven, which was a large port across the Solway Firth. There he signed up for a seven year seaman's apprenticeship on The Friendship of Whitehaven, whose captain was James Younger, a prosperous merchant and ship owner. His first voyage took him across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados and Fredericksburg, Virginia at which he stayed with his older brother William, a tailor, who had left Scotland for America over thirteen years before, and who now was living comfortably and flourishing.
Henry was born on May 29, 1736 in Studley in Hanover County, Virginia (Red Hill). His father John Henry was a Scottish – born planter. His dad educated young Patrick at home, including teaching him to read Latin, but Patrick studied law on his own (History). His mother Sarah Winston Syme was a young widow from a prominent gentrys family (Red Hill). Henry attended a local school for a few years and received the remainder of his education from his father who had attended Kings College in Abedeen.
When James and Elizabeth Monroe retired they moved to their Virginia estate called Oak Hill. During the next five years James still apart of the community he is a part of college boards, but still kept his life private. In 1830 Elizabeth Kortright Monroe died and Monroe moved in with his daughter Maria Hester and her husband in New York. Ulysses S. Grant was an American general and 18th president of the United States. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822, the son of Hannah Simpson and Jesse Grant, the owner of a tannery. Taken to nearby Georgetown at the age of one, he was educated in local and boarding schools. In 1839, under the name of Ulysses Simpson instead of his original Hiram Ulysses, he was appointed to West Point. Graduating 21st in a class of 39 in 1843, he was assigned to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. There he met Julia Dent, a local planter's daughter, whom he married after the Mexican War.
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13,1743 in Shadwell, Virginia. He was born into a family that had status, wealth, and tradition of public service. Jefferson was the third child in the family and grew up with six sisters and one brother. Thomas Jefferson was well educated; he attended private schools and at the age of seventeen he attended the College of William and Mary. Thomas Jefferson was interested in being a scientist, after learning that there was no opportunity for a career in science in Virginia he then studied law. In 1767, Thomas Jefferson was admitted to the bar in 1769, when Jefferson public career started he already owned more than twenty-five hundred acres that he inherited from his father who died in 1757. After marring his wife Martha Wayles Skelton whom was a young widow his property doubled. After the death of Martha’s parents, his property doubled again.
James K. Polk was an accomplished, hardworking president. Although Polk lacked charm and was known for his boring disposition, few could match his record of acquired land for the U.S. Polk is most well known for the fact that he is the only President to have sketched out a set of goals in his first terms and leave office having accomplished them.
James Baldwin was born in New York City on August 2, 1924 (Magilla 101). Baldwin’s dad made his childhood harder than it already was. His father constantly criticized and teased him (Magilla 101). When Baldwin was younger, he rebelled in many ways, first by becoming a Youth Minister at his family’s rival congregation, then by rejecting the church to pursue writing (Magill 101).
James Madison was born in 1751; he was the oldest of 12 children. He was from a wealthy Virginian family. James was a small child and was not healthy or rambunctious; he spent a lot of time reading. He was married later in life to Dolley Payne Todd and had no children. Madison attended the College of New Jersey which later took the name of Princeton University; he took a liking to history and politics, that opened bigger doors for the soon to be president of the United States.
James Monroe was born in 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He attended school until the age of sixteen. He then entered the College of William and Mary (Sauer, 2000, p. 233). Monroe enlisted in the army during the Revolutionary War and at the age of eighteen he became lieutenant. He served under Washington and he was later made a captain for his efforts in the battle at Trenton, New Jersey, where he was wounded in the shoulder. From then on Monroe was active in a variety of politics.
Marilyn Monroe is an icon that is idolized by many and had a great impact on pop culture. She didn’t have the best childhood and had a lot of up and downs in her life. Marilyn Monroe was born in California in 1926. She was named Norma Jeane Mortenson after a popular actress at the time. Her mother Gladys Baker was mentally ill, so she had to put Monroe in foster care. She lived in a foster home until she was seven years old. She had two other siblings from her mother’s first marriage. She never met them because her mom’s first husband took them to live with him in Kentucky.
Jefferson lived at Shadwell for a few years until the family moved to Tuckahoe. Jefferson was the oldest of his six sisters and one brother. Jefferson's father moved the family to Tuckahoe to take care of the children orphaned by his best friend. Around the age of 17 while on the way to college, Jefferson met a man by the name of Patrick Henry. The two became close friends and Henry called on Jefferson to help him get a license to be become a lawyer. Jefferson became Dr. William Small's, a Mathematic professor, every day cohort. Small introduced Jefferson to two of his closest associates, George Wythe and Governor Francis Fauquier. The four men created a quartet and Jefferson claims he owes a vast majority of his education to these three men. After finishing college in 1762, Jefferson studied law with Wythe and noticed growing tension between America and Great Britain. Jefferson was admitted to the bar in 1767. In 1769, Jefferson became a member of the legislature where he first tried for the emancipation of slaves. At his home in Shadwell, he designed and supervised the building of his home, Monticello, on a nearby hill. He was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. Jefferson met Martha Skelton, a wealthy widow of 23, in 1770 and married her in 1772. They settled in Monticello and had one son and five daughters. Only two of his children, Martha and Mary, survived until maturity. Mrs. Martha Jefferson died in 1782.
Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents to ever serve in office in the history of the U.S., serving from 1860 to 1865. A self-educated attorney from Illinois, he proved himself to be a brilliant leader throughout the Civil War period. Although President Abraham Lincoln faced the biggest crisis in American history, he saved the nation by preserving the Union during the Civil War, boosting the economy, by fighting for the abolition of slavery, and by boosting the Northern economy.
Jesse Woodson James was born on September 5, 1847 in Western Missouri. Jesse’s father, a Baptist minister, Robert Salle James and his mother Zerelda Cole. Jesse had one whole brother Frank James and other half and step siblings. Jesse’s father died when he was a young boy and his mother remarried more than once. When Jesse was 17 he married a young girl, who was also his first cousin, named Zerelda Mimms. They had 2 children, Jesse Jr. and Mary. (O’Brien)
In 1938, he and his father moved in with his aunt who lived in Augusta, Georgia. His Aunt Honey ran a Grambling house, and brothel to make ends meet. James would also earn money by working in the cotton fields, and dancing for the soldiers to help feed a household of 18 people. He also spent time in the church sweeping before every service, so that he could learn to play different tunes on the piano (Brenchley, 2003, DVD).
